How much has your mother influenced your style?

Last night I stumbled on a really awesome new blog called "My Mom, The Style Icon." The creator began her site by posting up stylish pictures of her own mother in her 20s and 30s, and attributed her mother as the main source of her fashion inspiration. The blogger then went on to include other photos of chic ladies she found on the internet, complete with background stories of the women and the photos. She also accepts submissions, so if you had a stylish mom, send them to momstyleicons@gmail.com.

While my own personal style is heavily rooted in '80s trends, I don't think I ever realized until today how much my mother's wardrobe has influenced me. Sure, I was an '80s baby, but aside from Jem, the cartoon rock star, Denise Huxtable of "The Cosby Show," and Mallory, the aspiring fashion designer on "Family Ties," my mother was the lady in my life I most looked up to, and her clothing definitely played a big part of it. As a kindergartener, I even drew a picture of my mom in her "graffiti dress," a green, knee length cotton

body-con dress with black prints and squiggles on it. I tried on her taffeta strapless dresses, lace shifts, leotards, Rolling Stones t-shirts, and black pumps, desperate to grow and fit into them. When I finally did, I often kidnapped the items and never gave them back--sorry, Mom!

For some reason, photos of your mother from before you were born are even more intriguing. I always wonder, who was this woman? What did she pick out to wear to school every day? Was she like me? Though I may never be sure if my mother

exhibited early hints of Joanna, I can honestly say, many elements of my mom have rubbed off on me. Largely her awesome style. I need to remember to thank her for these things on other occasions besides Mother's Day.

All my daughters have to say to me "is that looks like something Grandmother would wear" and I change my clothes! My problem is my girls don't want me to dress like a teenager but if I put on something "age-appropriate they say "those are old lady clothes, go change now!"

My mother (when I was little) always had really nice clothes and jewelry. People (to this day) tell me stories about how great my mother used to dress. She doesn't care about clothes now.

My family is mainly all women, and most of them have always been very glamorus.

My mom would wear those truly awful $1.00 pins, necklaces and earrings that were sold for Mother's Day gifts because we gave them to her. She's given most of them to me and the "vintage" appeal and compliments from others is amusing.

She wasn't/isn't a particularly stylish dresser, but she was always gracious and enthusiastic when wearing a gift item...even when it was pretty dreadful...and her lesson had more to do with being kind - and one of a kind - than anything else.

I always look at old pictures of my mother and grandmother and wish I had the outfit they were wearing! Theres this particular off-white silk dress my grandmother wore to my parents wedding with floral cutouts on the top-AHH! I want it so bad everytime I see that pic!

Thats why now I keep items that were special to me in storage for my daughter.

My Mother,I always thought, looked like wonder woman. She was and still is beautiful. She has always been simple and elegant with very little jewelry and fitted taylored clothes. Yea I went through the stage of more is better in the 90's when I was a teen but as I grew up so did my style. And the older I get the more I realize I am so much like her. We often get together and find that we match. I dont care my Mom is one great looking woman to match.

My mom was born in the 50's, but she was a teenager in the 60's (not a Flower Child - I wish she was!!) and she was really into the double breast jackets and boots. I have one picture of her in this jacket that I LOVE and I wish she had kept it! Sometimes I go to thrift stores and try to find jackets like that. I used to be into the high heeled boots, but they are too much of a hassle to deal with haha.
