How Much Weight Will You Carry On That Poor Shoulder?

keira knightley carrying a huge bag

keira knightley carrying a huge bag

The nonstop nature of New York that gets us used to carrying around enough stuff for the next 12 hours (or two days), and we want to know how our bag philosophies compare to everyone else's: Whether you live in a city, the ‘burbs, or somewhere rural, do you cart around a big bag that could fit a blow-up mattress, or do you limit your stuff and carry something a little more reasonable?

I tromp around Manhattan and Brooklyn with an oversized Gryson bag slung over my shoulder.  My sister does more or less the same thing (though she refuses to go to Brooklyn, ever) but takes it one step farther – she only carries the giant bag on her right shoulder.  Her shoulders are now kind of asymmetrical. Mine still seem even, but it may just be a matter of time.

So, how much weight will you carry? Let us know.

A LOT. However, as a college student, this is not always by choice. I don't have a car, and if I end up walking somewhere after my classes, I have no choice but to carry around my huge purse filled with text books.

honestly you dont need to carry around so much crap in your bags. just the basics:

wallet, lipgloss, mini post-its with pen, keys, hand sanitizer,3 pads/tampons and thats really it.

and i guess mase if needed but thats really it thought. you dont need to stuff your closet and bathroom in your bag. you are not mary poppins where one has the ablity to do so.

I have yet to find a way to lighten my load. Textbooks, binder, pens, pencils, eraser, highlighter, wallet, keys, more textbooks, umbrella, sweater, phone, sometimes a computer, water bottle, kitchen sink...I can't get through the day without all of that junk (although I could probably do without the sink)...sad, but true.

I carry a lot. But I bring my lunch to work to save money, a sweater for the air conditioning, and a journal or book for lunch and the train. Oh, and an umbrella because I've been stuck walking a mile in the rain one too many times. So it's not like I have a bag full of makeup or a blankie or anything-- just the stuff I want to carry happens to be large and awkwardly sized.

cell phone, keys, wallet, pins, lip gloss, powder, pads, and tampons, thats it for me on normal days. If I know I'm going to be gone a while than I'll throw in a bottle of water too.

every day is a different story. i might have class where i need to carry notebooks, binders, pencils and sketches with me; i might be going to work where i carry my laptop in my backpack, i might be interning where i carry pens, makeups for touchup, a binder and various essentials handed to me throughout the day. my left arm is going to be on the floor by this time next year, i'm sure

Back in high school my bag was constantly weighted down with books and binders and such. After a while I started noticing that the shoulder that the bag was normally on was starting to slump lower then the other and the collar bone was getting thicker (or starting to pop out more). Thank god I realized what was causing it before it became noticeable. I started switching the bag from shoulder to shoulder to keep from either of them having too much weight on it for too long. The shoulder that was damaged hasn't gotten any worse since so...i say, just switch the bag off from shoulder to shoulder evenly and it wont get bad. I would also advise not carrying too much weight at one time either, its not only bad for your shoulders, its a strain on the rest of your body too.

I actually went to the store to buy a two shoulder backpack. Two years ago, I tried going through college with an oversized purse. That hurt my shoulders, so a year ago, I bought a sling backpack (one shoulder things) and that hurt my back. So now, I'm using a two shoulder backpack for class and when I'm not in class, I only carry the essentials in my purse: wallet, phone, keys, lotion, minibag of mascara, chap stick & bobby pins, book [sometimes], and tampons.
