How to Wear Ruffles

Four do's and don'ts for looking your best with this feminine trend.
- Lois Joy Johnson, BettyConfidential.com

Sometimes a trend can sneak up on you in the middle of the night. One minute, you don’t see it, the next everyone’s wearing it. Last week, a bunch of us got together for drinks, and the weird thing was, we all wore… ruffles! Each of us, in an unplanned fashion moment went for the thrill of the frill. Ruffles have quietly become a chic new trend.

Here are four style secrets to wearing ruffles:

1. Ruffles can be your best friend. They can gently camouflage excess weight. Look for items that are constructed with mini-tiers, they create a shingle effect. The tiers slightly blur the silhouette of fitted skirts and sheath dresses.

Do: Blake Lively shows off her shape in body-hugging tiers.

Don’t: This isn’t the way to wear tiered ruffles; the proportions are too much for Mary Kate Olsen’s petite frame. She appears to be lost in the dress. MK, where are you?

2. Ruffles don’t always mean girly girl. Tailored girls can add a ruffled shirt or blouse to more structured bottoms to balance the sweetness of ruffles. For a good-girl-gone-bad look, soft ruffles can be mixed with tough denim, leather, and tight black pieces.

Do: Becki Newton of Ugly Betty looks great here in a sexy tight black pencil skirt balanced with a white ruffled top.

Don’t: Dancing with the Star’s Julianne Hough has just way too many ruffles going on here.

3. Too many ruffles are a bad thing. Don’t feel the need to add drama to a dress or gown with layer upon layer of fabric – just a few will do.

Do: Malin Akerman has just a touch of ruffles on her skirt for the premiere of Couple’s Retreat, and she looks gorgeous and feminine.

Don’t: Sophia Loren attracted too much negative attention with her ruffle-crazy gown at this year’s Academy Awards.

4. Use ruffles to accent and bring attention to your assets. Ruffles can be your secret weapon for highlighting your sexiest features like your décolletage or legs, but don’t overdo it where you want attention least.

Do: Beyonce shows off her sexy décolletage with perfectly placed red ruffles.

Don’t: Eva Longoria Parker is so sexy and cute – but in this get up, it’s hard to see that. These ruffles are so in-your-face, they’re overshadowing Eva’s best assets.

Would you wear this trend? Do you think ruffles add pizzazz to an outfit? Or would they make you feel uncomfortable?
