Intense Color-Preserving Trick

New York City hairstylist James Corbett is not afraid to "go there," if you know what I mean. His sense of humor is positively wicked, and his sense of color equally as bold.

"People want to stand out more," he says. "Browns are richer, blondes are blonder, and the reds are redder," he says. (He admits to turning out a small army of red-headed Ashlee Simpon look-alikes recently.)

"It's a sign of the times," he says. "Everyone wants to be seen and heard."

To keep your color as vibrant as possible, Corbett uses this homespun remedy:

In a spray bottle, mix one-part apple cider vinegar with three parts distilled water, and spray it on towel-dried hair after a shampoo.

"The pH in the vinegar helps close the cuticles, making hair smoother and shinier, and most importantly, keeps the color from washing out quickly," says Corbett, who suggests spritzing after every shampoo or so. "Your color looks intense for longer."

Because subtlety only gets you so far, y'know.

Vinegar does smell strong. Not to mention sour.

Yes, it is a very strong, lingering vinegar scent. I would recommend using a strong perfumed conditioner to help combat that rancid smell. I've tried the rinse before and it does work. Your hair feels less weighted down. Its worth a try, if you can get past the smell.
