Interview outfits on a non-existent budget

So on the flip side of being overwhelmed at the thought of having to find a new assistant, there's the stress of trying to pick just one of the many great candidates! Not only are the women I'm interviewing super-smart with impressive resumes, but they all have great personal style! This being a fashion magazine, it's no surprise that the topic of style came up a lot in our conversations.

One candidate talked to me about trying to buy two great interview outfits on a non-existent budget, an experience that I can completely relate to: On my first day as an assistant at Vogue, I showed up wearing a smart black Armani suit and my beyond-stylish boss gave me a look that said "We don't wear those here." Confused at her diss of my totally appropriate office attire, I looked around and noticed that everyone was wearing really short bright colored miniskirts and sky-high heels. That day I learned that in the fashion world had its very own dress code, and I had to throw the normal Monday-Friday wardrobe rules right out the window. I started by switching out my flats for a pair of stilettos, even though I had never worn heels before. (And I have to say, I haven't taken them off since!)

My advice to my assistant candidates and any one else about to enter the workforce is to hold off on the new wardrobe until you start the job and have a chance to check out the style culture. What's the style culture in your workplace?

    Hey Suze, great title.

Why don't you give the readers tips for actually putting together an impressive interview outfit on a budget?

    Thanks.

This is hilarious. The title is "interview outfits on a non-existent budget" but when you click on the link, most items featured are around $100. Since when did $100 for a cardigan count as a steal??

Sarah Jessica Parker's BITTEN line, available at Steve & Barry's offers suits and dresses appropriate for the office. Right now (due to financial trouble at S&Bs), these articles are under $10.00 each. The pencil skirt and the suit pieces are all wool with some poly and lyra. I purchased them and have worn them at business meetings. There are wool blend sweaters and pants as well. More affordable than a $100 cardigan.

someone told me to wear a little red in your outfit...something w/ red or gray and black...either of them will work. Red shows "power" or that you have passion or will be passionate about your job. Gray says your serious and not messing around.
