Is $1 Makeup too Good to Be True?

Ever heard of the brand e.l.f.? It can be a little tricky to find (it often sells at Big Lots!, Food 4 Less, Kmart and online of course) but if you do, you'll discover that basically everything (we're talking foundation, blush, eyeshadows, everything) cost $1.

Makeup for $1?! It sounds too good to be true, so it's no wonder TotalBeauty.com readers were skeptical. Check out their comments below, and if you want to try it out for free (hey, you can buy a lot else with that dollar), click here.

"I personally really like e.l.f. (Though you guys in the States get it at half the price that it's sold at in England!). I find their foundation brush excellent and I love the customizable palette I got from them -- the colors match effortlessly, go really well with any skin tone and create a really nice overall look." -- Bianca_S

"I haven't tried all the products, but I really like the lip gloss in a tube -- it really goes on nicely, and it has SPF in it. Best of all, my local grocery store sells it, so it is convenient as well." -- katkat

"I tried this brand and was disappointed. The eyeshadow faded as fast as I put it on (I don't have oily lids) and it didn't blend well. I tried another product in the line (lip gloss), another mistake. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money. Stick to well known brands like Bobbi Brown, Mac, Chanel, etc. I know its expensive; but when you start adding up all the money your spending on cheaper products; well, in my check book, that makes a huge difference." -- qvcshopping

"So far I've only tried the makeup brushes, and I love, love, love them. They are so soft for a $1 a piece! I bought the 12 pack set and had a coupon so I paid $6 and I would have gladly paid more." -- yukitea

"I don't really care for e.l.f.. I had bought an eyeshadow set and some lip gloss once. The eyeshadow was really dry and crumbly and flaked on my cheeks. The lipstick seemed just plain cheap. In my opinion it's just another really cheap brand." -- hankatcar

"I REALLY like the sunkissed bronzed powder and pressed powder I bought. I now use them everyday. I tried the lip gloss in a tube and I did not like it, but my friend LOVES it." -- ShiningStars3

"I have never tried it and won't because I am a professional makeup artist and have to use products of quality. If they are only charging a dollar, you pay for what you get, you can't expect to get a Shu Uemura or Chanel quality eyeshadow for a dollar." -- muclvdgift

I was skeptical but for $1 and a half-off code, I figured why not try it. I have gotten much success from their mineral eyeshadows and I have purchased a few of them. The brushes are pretty fantastic too. Of course they aren't as soft to MAC brushes, but they are 40 bucks cheaper! I was satisfied by everything I have received and will continue to get some cheap makeup to help offset my MAC obsession. :)

I've used them...and I don't recommend the cream eyeshadows. Wears off as soon as you get it. I found the foundation to actually match my skin..but then again..its just a powder. The mineral makeup line isn't that bad... and the nail polish chips quicker than Revlon... The liquid liner is great..but i bought it in blue..and it comes out black. But it was easy to use..and serves it purpose...

I bought a few things; eyeshadow applicators, mascara and liner. Didn't care for any of them. Won't try again.

I like the brushes but not the all over color stick, doesn't glide over. I usially just buy te brushes but I do like the mineral eyeshadows and the bronzers. I have used the eyeliner color pens,on some pens the tip was soft, yet on others it felt like i was using a pointed pen. That was the only thing i didn't like. yeah it is cheap makeup so you don't get the same quality as the more expensive ones but it does the trick and the brushes are very cheap that you can replace them every six months

The studio line is very good. I really like their products. I like the natural way it goes on. I am not a fan of the fake look. The all over color sticks are amazing. In this economy I am all about $1 makeup even if I have to reapply. Hint: use a primer for your lids. It really makes the color last.

I buy cheap makeup because I change my mind so often, compacts break in my purse, and trendy colors go in and out. I like elf better than Wet and Wild and NYC, and it beats the heck out of Avon! But I still like Jane best of the cheapo makeup.

I agree with VH...Jane Cosmetics, especially their blush, has been my staple for decades, only to find that they are phasing out my color and changing formulas, so I went on line and bought 5 of them at rock bottom prices. They will probably outdate before I get through them all, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Not everything is really good, but their studio line is pretty good. Among other things I bought their concealer, and it's one of the best concealers I have ever used.Their cream eye shadows are pretty good as well, have staying power and a nice variety of colors. I would recommend to go to them for anything except for the basics--their powders and such do not sit well on the skin, but shadows, mascara, even concealer is worth a try.

As a woman with darker skin, I found E.L.F. to be entirely too light. Their darkest liquid foundation made my skin appear ashen. The lipsticks, while tasty, are too frosted and light for me. E.L.F. has a kit where you can choose 4 eye shadows, but I opened it upside down and everything fell out and broke. I want to try the false eyelashes and at $1.00 know that if I don't use them more than 4 times, it's okay.
