Is head shaving really a new trend?!

High Snobette

High Snobette

Remember when Britney lost her marbles, smashed the car of a paparazzo with an umbrella and shaved her head? Hardly behavior to emulate... or is it? The head shaving part has actually become a fad thanks to the likes of Rihanna (she shaved the underside), Cassie (she buzzed off the right half of her head) and Amber Rose (she rocks the peach fuzz look). With all the time and money women spend on hair products, treatments and stylists who would've imagined taking an electric razor to the head would become in vogue?

Solange Knowles (at left) is the latest to jump on board the head shaving wagon, though she claims the press is making too big of a deal out of her fashion statement. These comments come via her Twitter:

  • listen. if. i. wanted. to. make. a. statement. i. would. have. twitpic'd. photo shoot. ect. i. was. simply. taking. my. son. to. school.
  • stupid. paps. took. pic. ive. had. my. hair. cut. like. this. for. two. weeks. i. was. NOT. inspired. by anyone. but. my. self.
  • i. have. done. this. twice. in. my. life. i. was 16. i was 18. did. not care about your opinion. then. dont. care. now.
  • dont. need. your. attention. or. your. co-sign. i am #3. trending topic. before. IRAN. &. some of you cant even locate it on a map. its sad.
  • dont. want. a. edge. up. or a perm. because. im not trying. to make this "a style" or a statement.
  • i. just. wanted. to. be. free. from. the. bondage. that. black. women sometimes. put. on. themselves. with. hair.
  • this. phase. of. my. life. i. want to spend . the time. the energy. and the money. on something else. not in the hair salon.
  • ONLY reason i responded to this i have is because i was disappointed to see my name more talked about than #iranelection
  • we. gotta. do. better. people.
While we happened to prefer Solange with hair, we understand how liberating it must feel to one day say, "screw it," and buzz it all off. We give her props for the bold move. But with this current "less is more" aesthetic, women have given up their pants, their bras, and now their hair. We're fearful about what's next. [High Snobette]

Geez, I hope not. Not a fan. I think long hair is so pretty. But if she wants to shave her head, fine by me.

I am pretty sure that she wears wigs or a weave most of the time, and I bet it is a lot easier to put a wig on with an already shaved head.

I shaved my head last month. I did not do it to be part of a trend, or for the low maintenance, and I sure as he!! didn't do it to emulate Britney. I did it because I wanted to, and I figured that I may not be willing to make such a drastic move in the future, so why not? I have seen a lot of women pull it off (though I am not sure Solange is one of them) - think Demi Moore, Natalie Portman, Sinead O'Connor. And a few celebrities doing something does not a trend make.

I have nothing against long hair either. Mine was below my waist a year ago. I just wanted to try the opposite end of the spectrum for a while.

I would never shave my head, but I do think it looks good on some people...not on Solange, though. :(

The thing that Ive noticed black girls can pull that off, but white girls dont look as great with shaved hair. I have a few friends (my black lady friends) that look sooo much better with their hair shaved off than spending (Im not kidding) 13 hours to get her hair did up. HOWEVER, do it if your sponky enough to do so! Its about being free!

when this trend takes hold, which it will.a lot of our asians will feel the crunch, then the barbers will reap the harvest.i am sick of finding hair all over the place when my granddaughters visit.the hair thing has a hold on women.trust and believe if menopause didn't have my behind i 2 would have hair all over the place, and tapping my head.ya'll know what i'm talkin'n bout.the economy is getting rough. So Off with the hair.

Black women do that all the time. I have done it 3 times in the last 5 years!
