Is it becoming OK to wear fur? One British paper thinks so...

This site is no stranger to the great fur dilemma, to how appealingly soft and feminine fur pieces look, but how wearing them seems wrong. It's the kind of confusing ethical dilemma that could keep one up at night, especially if one had just seen a pretty vintage fox fur jacket on eBay for just $47 that obviously would look amazing on New Year's and is totally affordable, but...still.
Anyway.
All personal conflicts aside, it looks at if fur is about to make a comeback. Yesterday, in the Guardian's Ethical Living column (ethical living!), writer Lucy Siegle asserted that, as more and more young designers are using it on catwalks and as even tree-huggerish celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow don pelts in major ad campaigns (hers is with Tod's) animal materials are becoming less and less taboo in the fashion industry.
Siegle goes on to say that this might actually be OK, that the use of fur can easily be excused on the grounds that  it's a sustainable fabric.
That's an interesting argument, but I don't know if it's true. A more compelling case can be made through this: What are we supposed to do with all of the fur garments that already exist in the world? Throw them in the trash?  Would it not be better for the environment to repurpose them in new designs? Use them to actually keep people warm in the winter? UGH. The debate continues.

Animals need their own fur to keep warm in the winter. Who decides if fur is making a "comeback" Maybe if everyone really educated themselves on how a fur coat was made, people would stop wearing it. For me, the torture and death of innocent animals isn't attractive.

...its only a sustainable fabric if farmers start breeding and harvesting these animals for personal gain...if farmers chose not to raise these animals in huge numbers and poachers simply hunt these animals in the wild...its not sustainable...what is sustainable is cotton...its natural...look into it...its never ever ok to wear fur...and my god only the greedy fashion industry can come out and say its environmentally friendly to kill a living being...skin it...and drape it over your body...there is nothing environmentally friendly about killing animals...its just silly...

A fur is a luxury. If you can afford it and wear it, why not?

...and as far as the furs that already exist...we vegans like to say that the "deed has been done"...when a lot of vegans make the decision to go vegan we often find ourselves with leather shoes and belts left over from before we make the switch...what to do with them...well the deed has been done and for most vegans there are 2 options...wear them till they fall apart and become useless...or donate them to charity...pre-existing furs should be handed out to the homeless...not exploited once again for the superficial fashion industry...

Ugh! In this day & age? When faux fur can be produced that mimics the real thing so well even PETA can't tell? I read a story of a woman wearing fake fur that got doused in fake blood by a couple of overzealous activists. I mean, seriously? Must we stoop to such behavior now that we don't have to kill to get that look? I don't think so.

It's one thing if the fur was produced a LOOOOONG time ago and is, indeed, a vintage - perhaps a hand-me-down from your mother. It's quite another to wear a full fur that's been produced in modern times. I'm not even a fan of real leather - regardless of whether it's snake, sheep, or plain ol cowhide. It just doesn't sit right with me.

I really think celebrities need to get with the new century and start endorsing faux as the way to go. The whole "comeback" of fur thing really has me concerned. If we're questioning how much plastic surgery is too much, and at what lengths people will go for crazy beauty treatments, shouldn't we also question bringing back the brutality of fur? Are we really going to drive species to extinction over looks?

I can understand why am Eskimo fishing on sea ice would be in fur. Why Mrs. Mark Anthony needs one in sunny California is a talking point.

I personally see the arguement for or against fur a moot one. Its more of a personal and cultural ethics question, much like how westernes are revolted and opposes to consuming dogs in Korea purely due to our association with the animal (a pet). In reality is eating a dog much different than eating chicken? One is cuddly and can to tricks the other clucks. It is how we associate differnt animals.

If you make the arguement how it is a waste to use an animal only for fur consider rabbits.

Rabbits might actually be considered the ethical fur for some because we as westerners associate it as a pest, food, a fur source and a pet. Bears likewise can act as food and fur source.

Even from an enviornmental standpoint you can argue for fur since it is not a synthetic and does not need to be created with chemical based products (unlike rayon and acrylic). Its also renewable. It has a considerable life for an article of clothing.

I am not condoning fur, rather you have to see how arguements for and against can be constantly looped. Ultimatly its a persons own ethics.

No, fur is never acceptable to wear! And that even means rabbit! What's wrong with faux fur: i.e. acrylic, etc. It just gives me the creeps when I even get near any kind of fur. I love all animals. Please! It is still considered animal cruelty all the way around!

If you can afford it I guess. Sometimes it looks tacky.

But then there are some nice vintage pieces. But then again its kind of freaky.

My grandma has this coat/shawl thing and she calls them (scalinski's)? I don't know but its like 4 ferrets attached tail to head... Thats kinda weird and strange to me.
