Is It Time You Changed Up Your Hairstyle?

My recipe for the perfect evening in: large bowl of popcorn, glass of Pinot Grigio (don't mock, it goes quite well with Orville Redenbacher), and a line-up of makeover-themed TV shows in my TiVo. Don't ask me why, I just love, love makeover shows -- makeover anything really. And of course, my favorite part is comparing the befores and afters.

Awhile back, I was lucky enough to get my own makeover, and it was a total blast. So I know the women below must have had a ton of fun getting their hair color makeovers. But even if you're not before and after obsessed like I am, you should still check out these hair color tips -- because we could all use a little change now and then, couldn't we?

Makeover One: Add Sophistication with a Rich, New Hair Color

Step 1: Choose a Hair Reviving Hue
A sun-filled summer wreaked havoc on Kerstin’s locks leaving her hair dry, dull and faded. “I want to repair, nourish and add more richness as we go into fall,” says the 41-year-old runner. Pelusi wanted to bring out Kerstin’s brilliant blue eyes by contrasting them with a warmer and darker hair color.

Step 2: Saturate Hair in an All-Over Color
Choose a rich chocolate or warm chestnut shade to reflect seasonal changes, but stay away from cooler, ashy tones, which can sometimes cast a violet hue. Choose a Level 4 or 5 shade, Pelusi says (try L'Oreal Excellence to-Go, $10.19). Work the single-process color throughout hair, making sure to saturate the entire length.

Makeover Two: Spicing Up Blah Brown with Fiery Red

Step 1: Reinvigorate Brown Hair with the Right Red Tones
Mary, 28, was growing bored with her mousey brown hair, so she was excited to have an expert evaluate her locks and guide her next look. Her only condition: “I didn’t want to go blonde again.” Pelusi chose a lively auburn single-process shade that is easily done at home, and Mary’s light eyes and freckles make her a good candidate for redder hues. “I pick up a spicy spirit from Mary,” Pelusi adds. Mary agrees: “I’m not a pushover.”

Step 2: Create an Even Shade with Two Formulas

Women often fall into the trap of using one shade all over, Pelusi says, which makes the top of the hair look hot and bright and the ends muddy. The more porous ends tend to absorb more color. To avoid this blunder, choose two different shades of permanent color: a browner, deeper auburn for the roots and a lighter (one level lighter), redder auburn for mid-shaft to your ends (try L'Oreal Feria Multifaceted Shimmering Colour, $9.99). Apply the darker shade first starting at roots, about one inch out from the scalp.

Wow, they look fantastic. I love the darker colors..way more interesting that the lighter reds. Makes them both look more sultry.
