Is Red the Universal Lip Color?
partner
Full disclosure: We are among the bandwagoneers to embrace
the red lip over the past few years as it has steadily made a
mainstream comeback. No more sheer gloss for us, thanks. When it
comes to important public appearances, we see red—the more opaque
and brighter the better. But as the old standby continues to regain
popular favor, we’re beginning to wonder if it’s less
statement-making when everyone at your party also has it painted
on. Case in point: At
amfAR’s inaugural Milan fashion week
event last night, we spotted at
least four crimson pouts, in glossy and matte incarnations and in a
shade range that included
Dita Von Teese’s pink-red and
Linda Evangelista’s orange-tinged
hue. Should we start embracing the
rainbow of lip offerings
that have made repeat appearances on the runway, or can red
really be universal and totally unique at the same time?

I love red lipstick. It's my go to color at Christmas. I also paint my nails to match. Now in the summer I'm more of a neutral earthy tone wearer. But I'm lovin all the reds that are out this fall. I've been designing some really nice accessories to go with my new skirt, scarf and jacket. I think it's a nice splash of color. Now when your wearing a solid red, like say a red dress you wouldn't want to wear the red lips. It's a little over powering. I would go with a lighter color. It can be too much for church also. Although very hot to wear with a black leather jacket...Nice post!

I have never worn red lipstick. I'm not shy of color, I have always just preffered to play up my eyes instead. Where should I go to get a red lipstick that will match my skin tone?

No way can I wear red lipstick. I look so trashy. Subtle peaches and shiny summer pinks are my go-to's. I'm kissable. But red! Never! Very few can wear it. Gwen Stefani reinvented it; she wears it in one shade only. Drew Barrymore in 1930's vintage clothing ( Grey Gardens) is a knock out in red lipstick!

I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but whenever i try to wear red lipstick I feel that it makes my dark circles more intense. Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me? I think that in order to wear red lipstick your face should be flawless, otherwise everything looks bolder, IMO anyway.

I can't wear lipstick at all. I have a wide mouth with thick lips, so it looks clownish when I try. I stick to glosses/chapstick and just play up my eyes.

I ve got black hair, and rather pale skin, (I always use no 1 or 2 foundation) Red lipstick really does not suit me. I prefer to play with my eyes instead.

I think red can look great, but can never find a true red--they all come off as hot pink on me for some reason.

Great. Where's the photo of the Africian-American woman in red lipstick? Or the Latina? Or the Asian? Or the East Indian? All the women above look lovely, but their skin tones aren't that different. Diversity Shine, diversity.
