A few decades later, my definition of sexy has strayed considerably. To my adult eye, the Ice Queen looks, well, miserable, like a woman in desperate need of a vacation, and perhaps some Prozac. Since my female friends seem to agree, I can't help but wonder if isn't time to redefine our popular culture's take on sexy.
Truth be told, the Ice Queen seems too outdated to be very effective. To have its full impact, it must be worn as a persona, not just a look, much the way Victoria Beckham has done. As she well knows, her soulless stare would be sadly incomplete were she not associated with a desirable other-half. This essential "accessory" makes the persona seem powerful, as opposed to just plain bitter.
If the Ice Queen's power stems, at least in part, from its penchant to attract the opposite sex, making all that effort to look hopelessly unhappy seems counter-productive. Much like the emaciated, heroine addict look that is periodically deemed fashionable, I have yet to find any living, breathing adult males who find the Ice Queen persona sexy in a real-world, come-here-now kind of way. Most of the men I know suggest that Victoria Beckham (and the countless models similarly featured in fashion spreads) give smiling a try... along with a cheeseburger.
What do you think? Is the Ice Queen timelessly sexy, or a silly blast from the past?
