Skin care products and spa treatments were once reserved predominately for women. However, there is and continues to be an increase in spa treatments and skin care products that are specifically designed for men. Men are finally recognizing that they to can prevent premature aging with a proper skin care routine.
Men’s skin is somewhat different than women. The texture and upper layers of the skin are heavier due to increased levels of collagen, and their skin is generally oilier. However, despite the differences men are also prone to premature aging (fine lines and wrinkles), brown spots from over exposure to sun and can suffer from blemishes and acne too.
So what does a skin care for men routine consist of? First and foremost a cleanser is in order. Men have a tendency to use hand soap or body soap on their face and these harsh ingredients can irritate the skin and dry out the skin by stripping of it of its natural oils. Add these harsh soaps along with shaving and dry patches and irritation are likely to occur. A good cleanser will remove bacteria, debris and excessive oil without stripping the skin.
Shaving cream should be applied after you have cleansed your face. A good shaving cream should contain emollients to nourish the skin. Follow with an aftershave to cool the skin and close pores, heal cuts if any, and leave a lingering scent.
If shaving is not on the agenda, then after cleansing your face follow with a toner. This removes all traces of cleanser, restores pH balance and closes the pores. Follow with a daytime moisturizer with SPF to protect skin from free radicals and sun exposure or a nighttime moisturizer before bedtime.
