Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise oversee design of Scientology clothes

In perhaps the oddest fashion news of the day, bloggers are all abuzz about a Saturday Daily Mail story announcing the creative partnership of Mr. and Mrs. Cruise. It seems the couple, both serious Scientologists, were tapped to oversee production for a line of new uniforms for the Church, and are offering their input and giving style insight to designer Richard Tyler.

This information made us wonder: Do scientologists really wear uniforms? Why? Is it like a nun's habit? A man of the cloth's robe? Do they wear them only in church? Or do they wear them out and about, Hare Krishna-style? Does a whole family wear the uniforms or just the adults? Are they for special occasions? SO. MANY. QUESTIONS.

Our confusion was only made foggier by the Mail's descriptions of the uniforms: "The scarlet-lined black capes with skirt and trouser suits are almost identical to the sort of clothes favored by Tom and Katie, if a little more vampire-themed. [The couple] gave the new designs the thumbs-up, along with church leader David Miscavige who had overall approval."

Capes?? Vampire-themed? That does not compute!

Honestly, we were expecting something more like this:

Or maybe, for no reason whatsoever except that we're immature jerks, this:
When you're fighting aliens ALL OF THE TIME, don't you need a space suit?

But if you're fighting aliens on earth, wouldn't they be at an immediate visitors-field disadvantage? Wouldn't THEY need an earth suit?

...so yes, this news is funny.

Do Scientologists wear pajamas under their normal clothes like the Mormons do? Are they going to wear the uniforms at church only or all the time?

I want a cape, too! I'll wear it with my scrubs at work! :)

Sounds like the same style as the Salvation Army except a different color. I know freedom of speech is being expressed here , along with the freedom of religion????

I'm confused to, if they wore uniforms and it says they will be the style that Tom and Kate wear then why have we never seen them in the uniforms? It's very strange but then again so is scientology and Tom Cruise.

As someone who used to live in Clearwater, Florida (Scientology home base) and date a Scientologist, I can tell you a whole lot about their uniforms. They are basically dark colored chino-style slacks and a button down shirt. The shirt's color tells everyone else what your "rank" is in the church. The only people in the church that wear uniforms are the underlings though. People with lots of money that are Scientologists do not have to wear the uniforms, as they are considered exempt.
