Kings to Queens: 16 Women Who've Stolen the Comedy Crown

Johnny Carson, Charlie Chaplin, John Belushi, Jack Benny … It used to be that comedy was a man's world, but before long funny women began bursting onto the scene, the stage and the screen. With ground broken by ladies like Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett and Phyllis Diller, stand-up lineups are as likely to feature the gals as they are the guys these days. wOw recently got to talking about the women that have left us in stitches over time, and here we pay tribute to these comediennes whose names came up in conversation. Our Gossip Girl Liz Smith, Peabody-winning Jane Wagner and "That Girl" Marlo Thomas – who all know from comedy – weigh in with a few of their favorite funny women. And let's be realistic: It's not always about the last laugh – it's about the biggest laugh.

Ellen DeGeneres is a true original," says Jane Wagner."She is just brilliantly funny from stand-up to talk-show host to whatever she does. And so loveable! Her sitcoms were funny and innovative. She has a witty, high-comedy style that blends seamlessly with her own persona — this is, I think, what gives her unusual magnetism. She is so real and wise as she brings us her sly insights into this absurd and foolish world of ours." We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

Tina Fey's spot-on impersonation of John McCain's 2008 presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, became one of the most entertaining highlights of last year's campaign. Her Palin impersonation, which was one of the most-watched skits in "Saturday Night Live's" 34-year history, finally catapulted the long-funny Fey to star status. Click here to watch Fey's first Palin impersonation on "Saturday Night Live."

No subject is sacred for Sarah Silverman. Though her style of comedy didn't survive her stint as a writer on "Saturday Night Live," she's been on the fast-track to success ever since. Her stand-up routine became the full-length feature film "Jesus Is Magic" and Silverman now has her own sketch comedy on Comedy Central, "The Sarah Silverman Show."
