Michelle O Is No Jackie O Clone

There are some striking similarities between the First Family-elect and the legendary Kennedy family -- youth, energy, style, beauty, hope...but Michelle O is not merely Jackie O two-point-0.

Admittedly, when we first met Michelle on the campaign trail she did recycle myriad Jackie-isms -- the pearls, the flip, the sheath dress -- but she has since come into her own.

Michelle has become a fashion risk-taker, clearly evidenced by her much-debated dress choice on Election Night.  She is also a modern mixer of high and low: she slips into head-to-toe J. Crew (left) as easily as she slips into a Thakoon runway frock (right).

Michelle Obama in Thakoon

She is a study in subtlety, yet she is far from a fashion wallflower.  Her choices are bold but not loud, strong but still feminine.  She is becoming a style icon -- quickly -- and stands poised to inspire a new generation of women.

Is the Obama White House going to be the new Camelot?  Perhaps.
However the queen of the castle is undoubtedly going to rewrite her own fashion history.

damn! Hating on Michelle. You know what shes gonna be better than Jackie-O Because she has flavor. Jackie O? Please... Plus theres different types of style. Michelle wouldn't look cute in those dry ass "jackie O" clothes anyway.

I like the way she dresses. There are a couple of things I didn't care for...(the dress she wore on election night), but I think she makes pretty good choices with her clothing.

Why can't Michelle Obama simply have her own style? Why does she have to emulate Jackie Kennedy?

Michelle dresses in what flatters her figure and that is refreshing..Too many women try to follow trends and end up looking foolish.

Of course Michelle isn't Jackie. She's Michelle Obama.

I agree with the others, don't hate on Michelle.

She is accessible, open and down to earth, with an air of confidence and intelligence the American public really didn't get to see of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis until the Camelot years were well over .....the time is now for Michelle Obama, let's celebrate her for her wonderful qualities as there are many to choose from - - mother, wife, attorney, daughter, sister and soon to be First Lady.

    Michelle Obama, you ROCK!!

The author of the post was not hating on Michelle. She was complimenting her by saying that she is not Jackie O, but she "will rewrite her own fashion history" and that "she is not MERELY Jackie O two-point-0". She was making the point that Michelle is her own woman, with her own style and that she is strong, feminine and inspiring in her own right. None of the comments sound like anyone actually understood the post.

I took it the way you did, Mary Alice. I think the headline for the post was more controversial than the actual post itself. I thought it was going to be an attack piece when I clicked on, but when I read through it, it reviewed both good and questionable choices. She's a modern working mom, just like the rest of us, and I know I don't look like a fashion plate every day. Now she's under the microscope. I remember when Hillary had the headbands at the beginning. I'd imagine it's tough to be under the spotlight. I'm glad it's not me!

Every one seems to need to compare something with something else. Since Jackie was the most stylish First Lady, Michelle was bound to be compared to her. The comparisons to the Kennedys do not end there. The author mentioned Camelot, one of the words frequently used to describe JFKs administration. Both the Kennedys and Obamas are young, with young children. Most of all, both First Ladies are model beautiful with tons of style.

Jackie had what is called "classic style" which never goes out of style or is termed "timeless". Michelle has this timeless style and shows us to have style, one doesn't have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars. Sure, there is disagreement on the election-night dress, but I think it was because the dress was first seen on a stick-thin model, not a real woman with curves. I personally liked the dress. Every stylista makes a mistake once in awhile-we just need to learn from them!

I am so looking forward to seeing what Michelle has to offer as a role model to African-American women as well as being a fashion inspiration.
