Miss Sister 2008: The Best-Looking Nun

An Italian priest says he is launching an online beauty pageant for nuns to prove that they are not all "old and dour."

Rev. Antonio Rungi plans to launch the Miss Sister 2008 contest in September and he says nuns around the world will have the opportunity to showcase their image and work.

Entrants will fill out a profile including information about their life and vocation -- as well as a photograph. The nuns may choose to pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered. Visitors to Rungi's website will have a month to vote for the nun that they consider "model."

Rungi, who hopes to draw dozens of submissions once the website is started, said that he will not be hosting a bathing-suit competition like the ones seen in Miss Universe pageants.

"We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits," Rungi told the Associated Press. "But being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn't hide it."

Rungi, a theologian and schoolteacher from the Naples area, also hopes that the beauty contest will give nuns more visibility in the Catholic church.

"Nuns are a bit excluded, they are a bit marginalized in ecclesiastical life," Father Rungi, told the AP yesterday after Italian media carried reports of the idea."This will be an occasion to make their contribution more visible."

I'm not Catholic, so please excuse my ignorance, but I always thought Nuns took vows of poverty and swear off things like vanity? Practicing Catholics, is this true, or just a misguided stereotype?

Beauty may be God given, but must you really impose an ideal on nuns like you do with the rest of women kind? The whole point of having the veils is that they are equalizers, no one is held above anyone else. Nuns are supposed to be free from the burden of worrying about how they look because they have the more important mission of serving God! A beauty contest would just undermine everything that nuns revere....

Do you really thimk it's owkay for a woman that devoted her life to sincerity, purity and simplicity to strike poses in front of cameras, wearing make-up and compete each other in main scoring of physical thing?

If we're being funny, it's cool.

But, if you're talking in affiliation, it's not good, I think...

Wow...incredibly offensive to women and Catholics. I went to Catholic school from grade 3 through high school and had many teachers who were nuns. They're just people. I really don't understand why non-Catholics find them so amusing. I don't think making nuns the butt of some twisted joke is really going to help matters either. This whole thing is appalling.

I belive its more to do that pervert priest, to know where are the beautiful looking nuns are so he can make his trip there and just f--- up. OR when teeagers and other mans would came to know about beautiful nuns in their neighbouring church, they would definetly go to church, but that will be for all wrong intentions.
