Miss Sister 2008: The Best-Looking Nun

An Italian priest says he is launching an online beauty pageant for nuns to prove that they are not all "old and dour."

Rev. Antonio Rungi plans to launch the Miss Sister 2008 contest in September and he says nuns around the world will have the opportunity to showcase their image and work.

Entrants will fill out a profile including information about their life and vocation -- as well as a photograph. The nuns may choose to pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered. Visitors to Rungi's website will have a month to vote for the nun that they consider "model."

Rungi, who hopes to draw dozens of submissions once the website is started, said that he will not be hosting a bathing-suit competition like the ones seen in Miss Universe pageants.

"We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits," Rungi told the Associated Press. "But being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn't hide it."

Rungi, a theologian and schoolteacher from the Naples area, also hopes that the beauty contest will give nuns more visibility in the Catholic church.

"Nuns are a bit excluded, they are a bit marginalized in ecclesiastical life," Father Rungi, told the AP yesterday after Italian media carried reports of the idea."This will be an occasion to make their contribution more visible."

I seriously wonder if this is a hoax. Although I like the idea of atypical beauty pageants that don't require women to get nearly naked to compete, I don't like that every competition for women revolves around her appearance. Why aren't there shows for men that are like this? Because men are taught their worth comes in a variety of forms they have as an individual. It's a shame that women aren't really treated like that too.

Yes, Catholic nuns take a vow of poverty, chasity and obedience. It's not that they aren't "allowed" to look pretty (many of them are), it's just not important in the grand scale of things. How offensive is this idea!!

I think that its a great idea... I for one am totally against sterotyping and saying that nuns all have to be old and ugly, well thats just not cool...

I saw a news report on television today about a young boy, (12 years old) who was denied the opportunity to sign up for Little League baseball because he pitched the ball at 40 miles per hr. They said that his pitch was to fast for the Little League Team. The young boy said that he didn't think it was fair for the judges to punish his God given talent.

I believe that is what people who don't think teacher, Nuns and mothers can or should be appreciated for their physical beauty.

Who thinks up this cr@p? This is so rediculous. A Rev is doing this? I can see how he wants to get more people involved in church but this is (in my opinon) not the best way to do it. Don't women have enough pressure to look good? Now we want to do this to Nuns? No offense to anyone who goes to church but I don't step foot in a church because of this type bull. I think this is very demaning to Nuns.
