If hairstylist Guido Palau has anything to say about it, the style set will be embracing classic pulled-back shapes when resort season rolls around. But these aren’t your mother’s updos. The Redken creative consultant has applied some crafty updates to old standbys, churning out modern interpretations of the French twist, the chignon, and the ponytail that you might even consider putting into rotation before 2010. Citing Kim Novak in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo as the inspiration for the matte coif he fixed backstage at Prada, Guido prepped hair with Redken Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder and then rough-dried it so the models didn’t appear too polished. The more polish the better was his mantra at Miu Miu, though, where Helmut Newton photographs guided a hard-edged, slicked-back style with intense shine that Guido managed by layering Glass 01 Smoothing Serum over Hardwear 16 Super Strong Gel, pulling hair into a low ponytail and securing it in a tight bun with bobby pins. He played with the ponytail again at Calvin Klein, although this time Guido’s goal was disheveled over sleek, which he achieved by keeping hair loose, low, and wide and pulling out wisps in the front to frame the face. Do try these at home.
