Nelly Furtado's Mini Makeover

When we saw these pictures of Nelly Furtado in Naked Eye magazine, we were blown away. Her look is young and fresh, and her eyes are more intense than ever. Impressive also because the makeup artist had done something new with her and it was subtle yet brought something extra to her look. We had to know what makeup products were used on her, so we asked Susana Hong, the hair and makeup artist who worked on her! It turns out Susana used Nars products on Nelly quite a bit and was inspired by Nelly’s new album, Mi Plan. Read below for Susana’s full answers on how she did Nelly Furtado’s makeup and hair.

What was the inspiration behind the look you created on Nelly Furtado?

“Mi Plan being a spanish album, I talked to the people from Naked Eye, and we thought it might be interesting to pursue a sexier and darker side of the Latin Album and Nelly. Though it had a lot of acoustics, and beautiful beautiful sounds, when one thinks of the work ‘latina’ we tend to link the words ‘hot’ and ’sexy’ with it, and we decided to push that theme.

How did the makeup look come about?

For makeup, Nelly did express that she was more comfortable with natural and clean eye makeup, but that I did have creative freedom for this magazine.

I ended up going pretty strong with the eyes, but nothing too structured….no sharp lines or heavy highlighting. I used really sheer metallic neutrals, the main color being Decameron by Nars, which is a cream shadow, and smoked out some black eyeliner on her top lid. Now, since her eyes are quite green, they ended up looking even brighter by the time we were finished with the eye makeup. Brown and neutral tones work almost for everyone, but especially great if you want to showcase green or hazel eyes.

We also contoured her already magnificent cheekbones with some more Nars Bronzer in Laguna. I thought her lips could use a really nude color as well, but we needed to brighten up her entire look a little, so I used a brick neutral. Red was suggested, to compliment the whole Latin theme, but I really thought it might be a little too strong and might cause an imbalance to the whole look.

What about Nelly’s hair? We love the waves and the texture, so tell us how you accomplished that?

Since her makeup look ended up being pretty strong, I thought I would balance the whole thing with her hair. The look was quite natural, a little distressed, very current and beautiful. I just used some Tresemme Thermal Creations Volumizing Mousse on damp hair, and scrunched while blow drying. Then, I used a one inch curling iron to add a bit more of a tame wave to a few of her locks that were going a little too frizzy. To finish and give that nice shine on carefully dishevelled hair, I spritzed some Tresemme No-Frizz Ultra Light Shine Spray.

I know me too! I don't speak Spanish so I was disappointed to hear that this new album wouldn't be in English.
