New York may finally ban that disgusting fish pedicure

Remember hearing about that creepy pedicure technique in China where people put their feet in a tank full of hungry fish that nibble the dead skin off your feet? Diane Sawyer even tested out the treatment on "Good Morning America." She was a good sport about it, but we, on the other hand, were horrified. Apparently it's gained momentum Stateside as an increasingly popular salon treatment, and finally cosmetology boards have come to the conclusion it is unsanitary. Can we just say: DUH!

Sorry to get all germaphobe on you, but do you know how many different bacteria are living in normal salons? Germs and dead are constantly skin floating through the hot bubbling jets in one of those massaging pedicure spa chairs, and can never be fully sanitized. Spa technicians sometimes reuse toold that are meant to be used once, or don't clean up properly, and innocent victims who go in or a mani/pedi are sent home with staph infections, athlete's foot, or worse. Now imagine that hundreds of little carp are in there eating away at your dead skin. You leave and then the next person comes in and dips their feet in the same yucky water with the fish, dead skin particles, and um, whatever the fish digests and comes out the other end. They're not sanitized--they're used and reused all day long, and potentially spread infections through open wounds. Yuck!

So far 14 states have banned the procedure, and New York State Senator Jeffrey Klein just drafted a bill banning the fish pedicure. Seriously, people. If you're so concerned about dead skin on your feet, buy a pumice stone, moisturize your feet, and put on a thick pair of socks. It's got to be better than hundreds of fish attacking your little tootsies. [StyleList]

Ummm.... what's the difference between that and hot tubs at spas and YMCA's? I'm willing to bet those fish spas are a lot safer than the hot tubs because you only immerse your feet in it. Fish poop (i.e. emulsion) isn't going to spread any diseases. In fact, it's a widely used fertilizer. :)

Going to the spa with open sores anywhere on your body is just asking for trouble, regardless of whether you use the fish pedicure or not.

I think it should be banned just because of those poor fish having to share the same water with people's nasty feet! I wouldn't be surprised if most of the fish in the photo above would be dead by the end of the day. Anyone who's ever had an aquarium knows how easily fish get stressed.

I will say one thing in defense of the fish pedicures. At least their teeth aren't strong enough to make you bleed. How many of you have been cut by manicurists/pedicurists? That really increases your chances of infections.

ohhh... that's what it's called, fish pedicure. i never knew they're a mainstream in spas there. i just witnessed those procedure in an aquarium/ ocean parks. i have a friend who happened to try it, she said it was good, but the funny thing she encountered was when an older woman stepped in and almost all of the fishes went to her rather than to my friend's. lol. :D just imagine those deep dead skin being eaten away... just hope the older woman doesn't have any skin disease of some sort. ^_^

Geez...calm down Joanna! To each her own! Once again, did you even go personally investigate the process to see how its done and how sanitary it is? Or, did you just watch Diane Sawyer and form your opinion based on her experience? Do you even leave the house and investigate the things you write about or do you just read what's on the internet and go from there?

People rub placenta into their skin and inject poisen into their faces to try and get rid of wrinkles. Fish don't sound so bad to me. And anyone who has ever gone swimming in a lake, pond, or the ocean has already been exposed to fish waste and other people's germs, btw.

I'm a master's student pursuing a degree in journalism, specifically editing. This article at least gives me hope that I can get a job upon receiving my degree. Are there any proofreaders left on the Internet?

WOW. This seems like it was written by a 7th grader. Sometimes spellcheck can be your friend. I hope you were drunk when you wrote this.
