Oh, dear. Now self tanners are bad for you?

OK. So here's the story. According to my favorite dermatologist/guru Leslie Baumann, M.D., a new study shows that self tanners may be harmful to your skin. Turns out DHA, an active ingredient in many at-home bronzers, makes your body hugely more sensitive to the sun's harmful rays. So, basically, you can self-tan, but then you can't go out in the sun and show off your tan. Which is obviously depressing. But maybe what this means is that all of us whiteys are finally being forced to accept our pastiness. Which is something that, I hate to admit, makes me feel kind nauseous.
But, I also realize it's because I've been programmed to think that tawny is way more beautiful. Maybe, maybe, if we all banded together, we could form a new aesthetic? One where instead of glowing and over-tan, blotchy-red-pale-and-a-little-veiny is hot? Maybe this is the look of the future? What do you guys think?

awww haha. I personally like white skin that's what makes us all different.

I'm naturally tan but my sister has white porcelain skin and even though she wants a tan, its her china doll skin tone that makes her so unique when compared to me.

    Pale is gorgeous!

live it like it love it

I've been self tanning and tanning in the sun for years and have not become more sensetive to the sun,but I tan in the sun very easiely. So maybe it's just people who are already sun sensitive. Tomorrow they'll say it's safe and good for the skin,so do what ever it's your body anyway. I love to be tan,and my skin is in great condition.

Ah no. Veiny and splotchy is not sexy. Smooth powdery white skin is however sexy. If you've got the blemishes going on, just go out in the damn sun. You need the Vitamin D anyway.

I love how so many people want to be tan but don't find darker people (such as ones of african or asian origin) beautiful. Everyone finds pale skin beautiful. Where have you been for the past 1000 years.

Funny how society views such things as the tanness of our skin. I mean way back in the day having white skin was a sign of how high in society you were because if you had porcelain skin it meant you didn't have to work. Everything we eat, drink, smell, look at or even think about is going to kill us anyway, so why not just enjoy life. :)

    E,

I'm telling you, yes, porcelain skin (like Nicole Kidman), is thought of as beautiful. Skin like mine (and Philip Seymour Hoffman) that's red and splotchy...no one wants. Think about how every white person in Hollywood gets those super spray tans before a big event. They all want to be darker, I swear. Also, I love the skin tones of African and Asian and Latin origin.

it's a cultural thing. in america, bronze is beautiful. we advertise self-tanners. in asia, i found that pale skin is beautiful and they advertise skin-bleachers! that's when i realized that the culture has an amazing ability to drive what people find attractive. whoa. so i don't care about getting a tan, i just care about protecting my skin. i don't want to have leather-textured skin, wrinkles and age spots when i get older, so i could give a hoot what this particular society touts as beautiful. i'm beautiful as i am, dammit.

that has been the style in the past. everyone forgot heroine chic? personally i love tawny skin but china doll is also very beautiful, as are all skin colors. And i agree with camijona; everythings gonna kill us so live life while you can! we cant live forever, the worlds crowded enough.

beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. There is no such thing as the hottest person or the best looking skin color. Not everyone is beautiful but there is beauty in every color. some people like tan and some like pale or black thats just how it goes, thats way we have different color people on earth and that means different opinions about everything. LET'S LEARN, LOVE AND SHARE.
