Reasons Why You May Be Losing Hair
partner
Twenty percent of women in
their twenties experience hair loss. This surprising stat came
from a new study by The Impact of Thinning hair (commissioned by
Peter Lamas Products)—which also found that 54 percent of women
with thinning hair wash their hair less, wear hats more often, and
use multiple products every day to make hair seem thicker and
fuller.

How to Get Thicker Hair
If your hair is thinning, it's best to see a doctor to rule out
any medical causes. In the meantime, there are some tricks you can
try that can help mask the loss. New York City hairstylist
Garren
suggests:
- Keep your hair shorter than shoulder-length and get a blunt
cut.
- Don't be afraid to dye your hair—dye swells the cuticle and
can make hair seem fuller.
- But if you do color it, don't go too dark. A deep brown can
exaggerate the whiteness of the scalp and make it more
noticeable.

I'm glad to see someone on Shine addressing the topic, but you know you didn't acutally list any reasons for hair loss--misleading title.

My hairdresser told me certain shampoos will help reduce hair loss. Do you have any recommendations?

i am 16 and i have lost a lot of my hair i had went to the doctor to get it checked out they said part of the reason could be really dry scalp, so i have this medicated shampoo i have that i am using, but i dont know if i can use any other shampoo to go along with it so my hair could have a nice smell. instead of just smelling like hair, do you know of any of this?

Sabrina; im your age i had a scalp condition that caused me to lose around half my hair (fourtunatly i have really thick hair :) i started using an perscription oil on my scalp at night and the flake went away and now my hair is growing back. the medicated shampoos never worked for me, so i don't know if they would for you either...

Laura K,
My mother uses Nioxin, and she believes it's helping. I've tried it in the past and didn't see a big difference, though. Lately I've been using organic bar shampoos (no sulfites)I find on Esty. I'm not sure if they're doing anything yet. I also started drinking white tea on a daily basis, which is full of antioxidants that are good for your hair, skin, and immune system--I think that's helped slow the hair loss. There's no telling how someone will react to a treatment, you just have to try it and see. Unfortunately there's just not that much research into real solutions for women's hair loss.

Sabrina,
I wouldn't add any other shampoos, if I were you--they may be what dried your scalp out in the first place. Just stick to your doctor's instructions. If you want to smell nice, try a light perfume; just mist it into the air and walk through it. That should make your hair smell nice without rubbing it into your scalp the way you would shampoo.
