If you were to visit Shine's Fashion and Beauty section the first day it launched last March, you would've found alove letter I wrote to France's first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. It went a little something like this:

"Seriously, maybe this is wrong because of the whole third-wife-younger-woman thing, but I don't care: I think you're awesome. I can't remember a cooler, prettier, or more badass first lady. I mean, you slept with Jagger. And Clapton. You read Yeats. You play the guitar. Nude pictures of you sell for a bazillion Euros (which is like double bazillion dollars). You recorded a Serge Gainsbourg tribute song that was actually well received. You speak three languages. The outfit you wore to meet the Queen this week? The one with the pillbox hat? The one that's making everyone compare you to Jackie O? Brilliant. I also like your hair, makeup and skin. Keep on keepin on, Madame Sarkozy. I'm psyched for your new life. I'm especially excited to see what you'll wear."

Lots of things have disappointed me this year—my 401K, Sarah Palin, the omnipresence of jumpsuits—but Ms. Bruni-Sarkozy came through, with one gorgeous outfit after another. I love her look because it's ladylike, unfussy, and classic and could (and should) be worn for 1,000 years. So, while my future style heart will go to Michelle Obama (I am a patriot, after all), 2008 belongs to the willowy Italian chanteuse who wasn't afraid to throw away her heels, lower her hem lengths, and still look amazingly glam.

I agree that yes Michelle Obama is where my heart is, in terms of fashion and because I'm an American. But the first lady of France clearly has a fantastic sense of style. It looks effortless and classic. I especially love that purple suit she's wearing!!!

First Lady Carla, you are an inpiration to all young women. See we never know where I lives will take us. We All make mistakes and some people may be judgemental - but those who have never made some bad choices in life stand up. I personally feel never be ashamed of the decisions you have made that is who you are. GO GIRL!!! My daughters have so many women status inspirations and I'm glad you are one of them!

It’s a Tie. They both look great. I wish you would have shown also shown a picture of their dresses. These two women have a strong personal sense of style; both very classic but drastically different from each other. Personally I love Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has made wearing flats sexy, while Michelle Obama makes J.Crew look so hot.

from a mans point of view:their is no comparison at all, carla doesnt have to spend hours on her hair, she is natural beauty, she makes her clothes look even better, for the first lady, well she just dosent have style at all,she has a grusome look on her face always, even when she smiles, almost looks evil.and all the stylest in the world, well they just dont have anything to work with, carla is just natural looking and looks gorgious .anyway, the past is the past thats why they call it the past its what she does in the future that counts....!!!#1

No comparison between Mrs. Obama and Mrs. S.

Mrs. S. spends too much money on her clothes, still looks like she wants to look lady-like but continues to look like she also wants to look like a little girl.
