Should Boob Jobs Help Fund Health-Care Reform?
user
Obviously, money is a huge hurdle when it
comes to Obama’s trillion-dollar health-care plan, but here’s one
revenue source government officials may consider: tax on plastic
surgery. The excise “bo-tax” (no we didn’t make that term up, but
wish we could take credit) allegedly being floated around by the
feds would be placed on cosmetic procedures that aren’t medical
necessities, like
boob jobs, teeth
whitening,
Botox injections, and
face lifts. New Jersey already imposes such taxes, the revenue of
which, we’d surmise, comes largely from the cast of “
The
Real Housewives of New Jersey.”
It would make sense to tax the rich for frivolities, right?
Unfortunately, the Plastic Surgery Channel reports that a large
portion of patients aren’t necessarily loaded.
“There’s a lot of data out there that a significant portion of
the patients that get cosmetic procedures are actually the middle
class. They will be impacted by this, as well, and it will further
delay them getting the procedure of their dreams that they’ve been
saving up for,” says a Dallas health-care attorney.
While “bo-tax” hasn’t become an altogether serious resolution
for negotiators, it’s on the table as an option. What do you think?
Is it just to tax non-essential beauty procedures to make national
health care a reality? [ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com]--Leonora

This is hilarious. I definitely think that if a woman is so vain that she wants to put plastic in her boobs, then yes, she should be taxed on that nonsense. Same goes for someone who was too cool to wear sunscreen and now wants those massive wrinkles removed.
Note: Reconstructive surgery - like giving a mastectomy patient a new pair - should fall under the category of "medical necessity". It would require some careful judgment, though, because a lot of people think that a set of A-cups makes you deformed and in need of reconstruction.

I think this is a decent idea. I would be concerned as to what counts as a medical necessity. Would post mastectomy implants fall into this category, or surgery to improve appearance following an injury or burns? These aren't really necessities, but I still think they are a legitimate part of treatment and we should not be taxing these kinds of procedures.

I would think this would be a slippery slope. Not all women who get procedures done are shallow and vain. There are people who take cosmetic surgery to extremes, which can be said about everything. I am right below middle class and I have been considering a certain procedure for years. I would have to save for a while and I dont think its fair to have extra tax on top of it.

How far are we going to take this idea of taxing the "rich"? The president speaks of them as if being rich makes you a bad person, as if they did something wrong to become rich. Soaking a particular group will only lead them to find ways around these taxes. I live in NJ, I had my teeth whitened last week, and my records show I had a cavity filled, so I could avoid the taxes. Believe me, I am NOT rich - I saved for months to get this procedure. This entire concept will quickly fall victim to the law of unintended consequences, by imposing undue hardships on the middle class, not just the rich.

If the government wants to find a way of taxing the rich, I think they need to take a closer look at what they are looking to make revenue.
A very, very small amount of people that undergo plastic surgery are rich. The majority of people are average working class people that have saved to have some of these procedures done. Because they have taken a loan for a self improvement they are now considered rich and it's time to tax them? PLEASE. Let's go after government to give up all of their little perks. Congress votes for their own raises, Congress has a separate social security system than the average person. And, why do you think that it? So it's secure and they don't have to worry about retirement, losing their homes, etc. I think it's absurd that the government would even entertain the idea of taxing something that someone has worked so hard all their life for. The government needs to butt out of this "area". You need to generate money, Take the hell out of the Alcohol and Tobacco Industry! Get people off of welfare and let’s have workfare. Job sharing sounds like a good idea. BUY USA made products in our country. IT's time the media starts pushing USA products. IF anyone needs to pay more taxes, I’d say the extremely rich need to help and not the women that has saved for 5 years for breast augmentation and now the government wants to tax it. That’s a big problem for the "American Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons. People will not be able to have to procedures done. Guess what will happen next. People will be desperate and start going to other countries for these procedures. Just like our jobs did. I think the doctors need to sit up and take notice of a new trend that will follow if the government starts taxing plastic surgery. Instead of taxing it, Surgeons are going to have to make some kind of insensitive for patients to use their services opposed to another county. We need to keep services, jobs and employment opportunities in this Country. If you not part of the solution you are part of the problem.
