Springtime conjures up images of flowers in bloom, weekends in Paris, oh and, cleaning. We know, this is certainly not the most exciting tradition come April, but the CC Style Team has some tips and advice to get you started on the right sartorial foot this Spring.
What should I get rid of? We at Closet Couture strongly believe in the rule of thumb that if you haven't worn an item in 6 months you should bid farewell. If you haven't pulled that piece out of the closet for 180 days, then it does not deserve a spot in your closet anymore! For example, if you have an item that you know doesn't fit right (we all have these pieces that are too short, too bright, too tight, etc) and it is not something the tailor can fix, then let it go!
What should I hold on to? You should always hold onto high-end label pieces for the quality of the design and the fit which will last forever - just put it away for a season or two if you are bored of it - most likely you will be excited to see it again in a few months! Designer shoes that aren’t dictated by seasons should also remain in your closet – for example, ankle boots that can be worn year round. Don't be swayed too much by what trends are in and out - trends cycle through and before you know it, your skinny jeans will be back in style. The rule: if you love it and it looks good on you, then keep it.
What should I buy for Spring? We are all being careful with our purchases these days, but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun! We suggest buying a few inexpensive trend pieces from fast fashion retailers like Topshop or H&M and couple these fun items with one great investment piece for the season. Accessories are great investment pieces for your wardrobe because you can wear them with many different outfits and on a variety of occasions, which keeps you from feeling like you keep wearing the same thing over and over. Also, replace and replenish basics - a fresh white shirt only looks chic if it is in fact, fresh!
Should I donate or sell my fashion cast-offs? Yes and Yes! Getting a tax break or money back for your clothes is the best motivation for cleaning out your closet. Well, that and the extra space that you create for new items! For very high end items you can search for designer consignment shops in your city. For items in good condition but not a designer label, you can check out resale stores that will buy the items from you on the spot. For these stores it is best to call ahead and see what they are looking for - often they are only buying certain items at the time. Finally, for all other clothes, take them to your local salvation army and make sure to fill out a tax donation form.
