The Best Flats for Fall

Take a step in the right fashion direction with these fierce flat shoes.

Who says you need to teeter on treacherous heels to be fashionable? Not us, nor Audrey Hepburn! The fashion icon shunned sky-high heels, and practically lived in flats. And what's good enough for Audrey is good enough for us! Fall ’09 is giving low-rise flats a new lease on life thanks to trendy stud details, feminine ruffles and bows, sumptuous suede, rich autumnal hues, cloudy grays, and boyish lace-up brogues. Here are 10 of our favorites (and we think Audrey would have loved them, too!).

1. Pour Le Victoire Juliet Stud Suede Flats ($195, shopbop.com). Silver oxidized studs add some rock-star glam to these Parisian-chic gray slip-ons.The flats also come in black if you crave a bolder look.

2. Kryptic Gold Studded Shoe
($110, topshop.com) Embrace two trends with one shoe by slipping on these edgy studded brogues in black suede. Pair them with patterned tights, a black blazer, miniskirt and tank for a dose of downtown cool.
3. Delia’s Natalie Suede Flat ($49.50, delias.com) These reasonably priced skimmers come in your choice of black, teal or a lovely dove gray that would look fabulous with a pastel frock.
4. Opening Ceremony W28 Gradient Flat ($375, openingceremony.us). Cut-out slats and a combination of autumn-perfect navy and moss brown suede give this lace-up oxford some major oomph.
5. Old Navy Studded Ballet Flats ($24.50, oldnavy.com). Available in fuchsia, peacock-green, black and taupe, these faux-leather flats boast a twinkling spray of tiny gold studs — not to mention a bargain price tag that any budget can handle.

6. Prada Bow Ballet Flat ($530, barneys.com). A little goth, a little girly, these splurge-worthy suede shoes (also available in navy and taupe) sport a studded bow at the toe. Go on, you’re worth it.
7. Kimchi Blue Oxford ($58, urbanoutfitters.com). We could totally see a young Coco Chanel wearing these menswear-inspired black lace-ups. The ribbon laces give the shoes a romantic twist.
8. Steven by Steve Madden Stardom Flats ($129.95, stevemadden.com). Bust out the sunglasses! These mirrored skimmers (in black, blush or yellow) were made for stealing the spotlight.
9. J. Crew Charlie Ruffled Suede Flat ($138, jcrew.com). These simply sweet shoes — which have ruffle trim at the toe — can be worn with just about anything. Think of them as your not-so-basic fall basic.
10. Coconuts Holly Flat ($59, piperlime.com). Go green with Coconuts’ vegan-friendly, synthetic suede take on the ruffle-trimmed flat, which comes in black and a bold purple that’s perfect for fall.

My husband would make fun of me if I wore these. I have some really cute mary jane flats and he hates those! My favorite on your list would be that last one from piperlime.

A lot of these are so cute, especially the J. Crew ones, unfortunately, I can't shell out hundreds of dollars for shoes. They are cute though.

These flats are ugly and over priced. Who needs expensive shoes these days? That money can go to so much better things than these shoes.

Yeah, overpriced and ugly. I have bad feet and can't wear anything with a hell any longer. But these flats offer little support and cushioning for the feet. They may not be comfortable at all. I used to wear flats like these and developed neuromas on my feet from the pressure. Now I live in tennis shoes or other more supportive flats. Take care of those feet girls for you may end up like me. I liked heels years ago and now I am suffering for it. Lots of foot surgery later.
