The Best Way to Have Great Skin this Summer

Like bathing suits, sunscreens aren't one-style-fits-all -- but the best ones are flattering, nonirritating, and prevent indecent exposure. These new products offer extra-strength or innovative ingredients to deter aging, burning and skin cancer. - Hannah Morrill

AVEENO CONTINUOUS PROTECTION SUNBLOCK LOTION FOR FACE SPF 70
An antioxidant blend of soy and vitamins A, C, and E “reduces free-radical damage,” says Nicholas J. Lowe, clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA. (With daily use, he adds, high SPFs can be aggravating to the skin; usually, SPF 15 to SPF 30 will suffice to prevent sunburn.)

COPPERTONE ULTRAGUARD QUICKCOVER LOTION SPRAY SPF 30
The white mist applies easily to the body and dries clear, providing more uniform coverage than lotion.

DERMADOCTOR AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' SPF 30 PFA +++
Although the European PFA rating system is not recognized by the FDA, this sunscreen's three +'s are an indicator of UVA protection, or defense against aging rays. Because the product contains anti-acne ingredients, reapplying may not be advisable, Lowe says, so it's best for limited sun exposure.

LA ROCHE-POSAY ANTHELIOS 15 contains the powerful UVA blocker Mexoryl SX in the highest concentration available in the United States.

NEUTROGENA ULTRA SHEER DRY-TOUCH SUNBLOCK SPF 85
The high SPF extends resistance to burning UVB light, but it's crucial to maintain protection against UVA—which this product's Helioplex formula does for at least four hours.

PRESCRIPTIVES ALL-WEATHER FRIEND DAILY UVA/UVB SUN PROTECTION 40
adds antioxidants to shield against environmental pollution; caffeine is known to destroy cells damaged by UVB, which could help prevent skin cancer.

VERDURE MATTE MOISTURIZING PHYSICAL SUNSCREEN WITH ANTIOXIDANTS SPF 28
deflects rays with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Green- and red-tea extracts “prevent damage and reduce inflammation,” says Eric F. Bernstein, clinical associate professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania. Broccoli extract, another antioxidant, has been shown to reduce skin-cancer rates in mice.

VMV HYPOALLERGENICS ARMADA FACE AND BODY SHIELD SPF 60
Because it contains anti-inflammatories and is free of allergens, “it may be a good product for people with sensitive skin,” Lowe says.

It is also important to protect your skin whenever the sun is out, even early morning and late in the day(sunny, rainy, cloudy days). This is when the UVA(aging) rays are out. Many sunscreens only shield UVB(burning) rays, which are the strongest mid-day. Look for a SPF that covers a broad-spectrum blend including zinc oxide or Avobenzone, blended with other SPFs like titanium dioxide, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octyl methoxycinnamate. I personally am reversing the damage I caused to my skin after years of sun-abuse. It is wonderful that we have the knowledge now to prevent damage, not just the aging or burning, but skin cancer. I wish I knew then what I know now!

I like to break open capsules of vitamin E and rub it into my face and I can really tell the difference. People also always think I'm younger than I am and I think that is in part to good skin care!

I love the spray. I have a 7 year old son and it's a lot easier to spray him down than try to keep him still long enough to rub lotion on him. Great stuff!!

I really like the Neutrogena kind. I could only find the SPF 70 version but I would use the 85 if I could find it. Most sunscreens make my face sting and are too oily but the Neutrogena kind is dryer to the touch and doesn't make my face sting.

I love to use Mary Kay Day solution because it has and SPF of 25 in it so I know I'm protected and looking good at the same time! :)

Aveeno products on my skin have proven to be the best. My friends think it is funny because i have Aveeno shaving cream, sun block, lotion and even chapstick.

Living in San Diego and being out at the beach all day playing volleyball and swimming, a person like me sure can use a strong and effective sunblock. I have tried just about every brand out there and Aveeno has shown to be a superior product.

I use Ocean Potion with SPF 50 and it works pretty good! I have very, very fair skin. I also use Neutrogena on my face with SPF 45 once a day and it burns, especially on my cheeks. I didn't know that the reason was because the SPF was high but I do know now! I can never find SPF over 50 in stores and didn't even know they made it higher then 50.

Ha! I can not believe that the US still does not allow some of the products that other counties do, especially ones that are intended to protect us! LA ROCHE-POSAY ANTHELIOS 15??? I use that same one with SPF 65!!! Of course I have to buy it in Tiajuana (mexico for all of those not in Cali!) but it is dirt cheap ($25) and one of the best sunscreens you could purchase! Do you really want the same company that makes your breakfast cereal to make your sunscreen? that's what happens here!
