The economy is in the toilet—naturally, you'll start wearing lipstick

There was a story in last week's New York Times about how the sales of lipstick—not gloss—are an economic indicator and how, in tough times, women in this country turn not only to just smaller indulgences to quell their retail fix, but specifically lipstick. At first I read this and felt the same way I did about the whole "dresses are dead" thing. Like, "Oh, New York Times, you style prophet, tell me Oracle, what else will I wear next year?"
But then I realized I'm actually way, way, way tired of lipgloss. I'm sick of it's glossiness, it's very celebrity slickness and I'm especially over how it gets stuck to my hair.

According to the article, you will be buying lipstick for three reasons:
1. It's a small indulgence, "an inexpensive treat meant to substitute for a bigger-ticket item."
2. It's a "morale booster like Charlie Chaplin films were during the depression"
3. Women wear lipstick, “to put forward an image that they are more alive and more vibrant, and not as down in the mouth. It’s part of the uniform of desirability and attractiveness."
Will you make the switch? To a 1940s red perhaps?

Personally, I love gloss over my lipstick. It enhances the beauty of my lips. To me makeup in general is enhancer to our inner beauty. And it matters to me only how I look when I wear it !!!

I just saw a story that said unless you put on an SPF-heavy balm under your lipgloss, the gloss actually increases your chances of getting skin cancer on the lips.

The good thing about Avon and mark products, is you can get a sample first. Or just order the color you think you like. If you don't like it you can return it. AND... it is delivered to you. You don't have to drive and park and walk to a store or mall.

Two comments - First, I still like gloss because it sort of finishes the look and keep the lips softer.

Second, Red is a tricky color. You have to find the correct red for your coloring. Your skins has certain undertones (blue, yellow, etc.) and that has an impact on how red looks on you. Since it is such a dramatic color, the wrong red can be ghastly. My undertones are yellow/warm. The blue looks crazy on me - but pretty in the tube or on a blonde.

I quit buying lipgloss a long time ago. I agree with the comment above about eating greasy chicken. The lipsticks also come in reasonable price ranges.

These days, I wear a minimum of makeup. Once in a while, I wear lipstick, but not often. Lipstick lost a lot of its appeal for me after I read that the average woman eats (and worse yet, eliminates) four pounds of lipstick in her lifetime! I've also heard that anything one puts on his or her skin eventually winds up in the liver. So we must be very careful what we put on ourselves. Natural ingredients are best.

I like red & wine shades of lipstick. Don't shoot me for this part... I have those big pouty lips that people pay for (I know poor me huh) lol So point of that is how do I wear the fun dark colors with out looking like I am screaming I'm a vamp or a harlot??? Is it possible to wear a vibrant red that still looks at least semi natural?

lipgloss lasts about one minute and has no color really. for the high schoolers....better off spending on a creamy longer staying lipstick that actaully lasts

As much as I'd love to wear fire engine red lipstick of the 1940s, it just doesn't suit me at all. I find that reds like wine & burgundy go better with my light tan complexion. For liner, I use this amazing invisible lip liner by Mary Kay-- which is a real heaven-sent as it takes the stress off having to match your lipstick & liner. As for lip gloss, it's definitely handy for those days when you're either too lazy or pressed for time to apply lipstick. Plus, I love how gloss makes your face look refreshed in an instant. My fave gloss shades: vintage pink/rose, peach-pink, champagne pink & nude pink. You can never go wrong with these time-tested hues as they look good on all skin tones.
