The first women of the G-20 Summit: How they measure up to their famous husbands

Michelle Obama played hostess to the spouses of leaders from all over the world during the G-20 Summit that began Thursday in Pittsburgh. Opening night included a reception at the Phipps Conservatory (where Mrs. Obama wore a controversial dress by designer Thakoon). Other events on the first ladies' itinerary included an intimate dinner at Teresa Heinz Kerry's farm, a tour of the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School, and a visit to the the Andy Warhol Museum.
    • Carla and Michelle, BFF? In the time since Obama has been in office, the French and American first ladies have attended multiple events together. And, though the fashion world has tried to paint them as rivals, they are actually quite fond of each other, as this picture attests.
    • It's no wonder, really, both are accomplished women who had engaging careers outside of political life, and, let's face it, both women also really love clothes.
    • But who else attended? Thobeka Mabhija, who's just one of South Africa President Jacob Zuma's five wives. She's a former bank employee and is known in her country as a glamorous beauty.
    • First Lady Kim Yoon-ok has been married to South Korean president Lee Myung-bak for nearly 40 years. She's also a serious scholar who's completed several advanced degrees in just the past few years.
    • Russian First Lady Svetlana Medvedeva (arriving at the Andy Warhol museum) is a stylish socialite and supporter of the arts. She met her husband in middle school, when they were both 14.
    • Before becoming the wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Sarah Brown (pictured Friday in a jaunty little black and white suit) was founding partner of a large and successful public relations company.
    • The wild card of the bunch, Miyuki Hatoyama met her second husband, the newly-appointed Prime Minister of Japan Yukio Hatoyama, in San Francisco in the '70s when he was a student at Stanford. She has been an actress, cookbook author, and artist. She recently claimed she knew Tom Cruise in a past life, when he was Japanese, and that she'd love to act in a movie with him.

Carla looks lovely. Michelle looks like she is ready for happy hour. Also, what is with her hair? The front looks just fine but the back is just awful! I think the First lady has made some very nice fashion statements, but this is not one of them. The long beads do nothing for the dress either.

She really needs to learn how to stand up straight. She should have been wearing something more elegant, rather than this. This dress is rather common, not remarkable at all.

I agree with MistressMinx, she needs to learn to stand up straight. She is a public figure, afer all.

    Carla looks so elegant.

I'm from Pittsburgh and I just want to say that I'm SOOO glad this is almost done and over with.

I know that she dresses in clothes that are attainable for the average woman, and I love that. However, coming from an average woman, if I were meeting with the leaders of the world I would have been more elegant than this. Especially with the hair, the little pony thing in the back looks sloppy. Again I am a fan of our first lady, I think she is a fantastic role model for our young women and I think she does a fabulous job of keeping herself down to earth with her clothes. I just think that this time, based on the pictures, she looks ready to go to a summer BBQ.

Black is beautiful but Michelle is not measuring up to our standards of dress and style. One of her conservative suits and a DNC hairdo would do it for me. My grandma would turn over in her grave. The firecracker ponytail is not her best but she doesn't look like she rolled out of bed.

Wow. Synia is a rude one, isn't she? And a tad bit on the racist side...that's a shame. I thought people had gotten over the "black and white" thing a LONG time ago.

I think Michelle is beautiful, however I don't think that she chose the right dress for this occasion. Her hair looks fab in the front but the back looks pretty "bedheady". Mr. and Mrs. Obama do look like they are in love, and I think that's the best look for anyone :)

Being a public figure, I think she should have dressed elegant. As for the common woman I consider myself one, I have to admit I would not wear that dress anywhere in public. I would probably not even wear it in my home. So Michelle I say forget about trying to wear clothes that are attainable for the common woman, and start dressing the way a first lady should. As for the hips most black women do have large hips, and the gut maybe she is pregnant, or it could just be the dress the way it is made. Synia calling her ugly you are entitled to your opinion, but you may also be ugly as no one knows what you look like.

I really do not think she looked elegant at all, her dress is "strappy" not "sleeveless" As the hostess she should have looked so much better. Seems like she was dressed for a casual luch on the beach. Look at Carla Bruni, or Margarita Calderon from Mexico, she also looks elegant.

La La, give up on Synia. God himself could tell her, I will promise you entry into Heaven if you would say one thing nice about Michelle Obama.

She would ask God what is the temperature in Hell and would she have to share a room.

There are somethings that wil never ever happen. I deal with it and move on.

Hello Synia, how is life treating you?
