The groundbreaking, all-black issue of Italian Vogue (Tyra's in it!) is almost here
editor
There's a story in
The New York Times today about the
much anticipated all-black issue of July's Italian Vogue. The newspaper interviewed both editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani and photographer Steven Meisel about their awesome, monumental project—in which Meisel shot a full 100 pages.
Among my favorite bits:
- "Racial prejudice in the fashion industry has long persisted because of tokenism and lookism. 'We already have our black girl,' says a designer to a fashion-show casting agent, declining to see others. Or: 'She doesn’t have the right look.' Laziness, paranoia and pedantry may also have something to do with the failure to hire black models for shows and magazine features in any meaningful number."
- Sozzani says she was inspired by Barack Obama's campaign and the lack of diversity on the runways.
- Meisel says: "I thought, it’s ridiculous, this discrimination. It’s so crazy to live in such a narrow, narrow place. Age, weight, sexuality, race — every kind of prejudice.”
- And: "I have asked my advertising clients so many times, ‘Can we use a black girl?’ They say no.” The concern is that consumers will resist the product, he said. “It all comes down to money.”
The Times also got a sneak preview of the issue—which features models like Veronica Webb, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. The Italian Vogue magazine comes out in Europe next week, and will be available in the US shortly thereafter. You can see a slide show of the
really beautiful photos here.

Jennifer,
Thanks for spreading the word. I read the article and am amazed that this actually is still an issue today. I think the focus is really High fashion with a capital "H" because I have seen diversity grow in modeling at other levels of the fashion and beauty spectrum. I am thinking of companies like Saks, Land's End, Kohl's, Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers, Sephora, Revlon, L'Oreal, MAC, etc. When it comes to Chanel, D&G, Gucci, etc. we see more European traditional looks. As the article stated YSL has always been at the forefront of inclusion in the high fashion world. Ralph Lauren, too.
My son (15) is a professional actor/model and his fellow actors/models at auditions are everyone! Japanese, Chinese, African American, Mixed Races of all kinds, Latinos. And also every body type imaginable! There are often "just African American" jobs and "just Euro" type jobs, but Many jobs are "send everyone" "all ethnicities."
Why we need Obama! He is two races in one great human being. It will dispel any myth that one race is better than any other or more powerful.

Preach Spinkieg,
When you are not the recipient of decimation it’s hard to understand what we feel when we hear a story like this. I would love to see an equal representation of the world in magazines, not just black and white. There are beautiful Latin, Oriental, American Indian, African….. women out there that should be on the covers and inside.
I don’t even buy those magazines because they’re not talking to me. You will see an article about skin care or hair care or what bronzer to use, I don’t need any frigging bronzer, thank you. Oh and don’t get me started on the other mags like US Weekly (yeah I get it, Us meaning Ya’ll)

Every white person who has left a "what more do you want" and "i'm tired of this" comment has no idea what it means or feels like to be black. Just as we will never know what it feels like to be white so before all of you jump on your Al Sharpton bandwagon you should think to yourself...I have no idea how it feels to walk in their shoes and ultimately you should just be quiet. And before you pull the "I have black friends" card that doesn't make us feel like you know us any better! I can't wait for the Vogue issue! Oh yeah OBAMA for president hehehe!!

This is to you "sld777"....what's really and truly "REDICULOUS" is someone like you, who is unable or worst yet, unwilling to have compassion for blacks and the horriable decrimations we still face every day....you should be ashamed of yourself for posting that un-called for statement....if we were NEVER deciminated aginst in the first place then we wouldn't be on here defending how we feel and trying to get some frinkin' equality.....something we should have had since the beginning of time....people with views such as yours has NO place in my world...i dissmiss you....and for you Davine, i thank you....

Hey there "Gapeach"...i could AGREE with your post 100%....you want to know how i say Obama...."One Brillant American Man Atlast" don't these people think we are "tired of this" and don't they know that "we want more equality" think about this america: it's not like we had a choice to come over to this country on a frickin cruise ship.....we were brought here against our will...in chains and shackles....stacked on top of the other...and when got here....how were we treated? most imergrints came to the usa because they choose too....but not blacks...and then you tell us if we don't like it here...we should "go back" where we came from.....screw that...I WAS BORN HERE...and I'AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE....

SpinkieGirl all im saying is that if you werent the slave yourslef, try not to make yourself the victim. Everyone has their own opinion about ppl it doesnt mean they are racist. African American people are already a part of society. or do they still have to sit on the back of the bus? NO, when ppl sy first african american this or that is to be appreciated. they are giving recognition to the African American race. If they didnt do that im sure we would have a lot of Angry African Americans saying, hey why didnt they mention that? either way it seems to me that no one can ever be satisfied, so just learn to cope with it :-]

What does this article mean by "the actually really beautiful?" Is it a surprise that the photos of the black women featured in the Vogue magazine were going to be beautiful?

I'd say it's long overdue too! I've never believed this particular Myth that Blacks on the cover don't sell magazines. If you put it out there, then people will perpetuate the myth. I think we're witnessing the last bastions of institutional racism in media crumbling at the moorings.

Reading some of these comments makes me ashamed to be an American. It is time to put aside all the comments about black this, white this, latino this, we are all Americans and we need to act like it. There is enough wrong and evil in this world without adding to it. Italian Vogue has made a statement, Black women are beautiful. We are not the ones always putting a label of Black or African American in front of everything. We are men and women first and Black second. When we as American can all embrace this concept, then we will be truly equal.

No matter the color of a human being..we all have unique qualities expressing our beauty and that should be celebrated and embraced in the fashion world. That could help change the outlook of a future free of rascism and full of diversity. I have seen absolutly gorgeous black women, native american women, asian women, indian women and so on that no offense, but have a lot more natural beauty than the plain, anorexic, white models. There needs to be change..it could be a beautiful thing. I understand money is a large factor, of course in an industry, but where is the passion and the vitality if another human being is denying a model because of her race, merely out of fear?
