The memory fades, the desire to buy things forges on

When I saw Julie Delpy's very cool movie 2 Days in Paris last year, there were certain items her character wore that I promised myself I would hunt down and find, no matter what. I had big plans: I was going to commandeer the actress's style completely, and it was all going to begin with one very awesome messenger bag. It's now 8 or 10 or 13 months later, and while I still want everything from the 2 Days in Paris wardrobe, I no longer remember specifics. Was the bag canvas or leather? Army green or broken-in brown? See, that's the amazing thing about fashion inspiration—even though I don't remember the exact details, the sense of things (or the "vibe," as we like to say in magazines) has stayed with me. I could go back and watch the movie again, but the truth is, if I go out and buy this or this or this, I'm no longer copying a look so much as letting one sit with me until I make it my own.
