The not so good at New York Fashion Week: Orange fur, acid wash, and how everyone wants us to live in the '80s
Shine editor Joanna and I were talking this morning about how just kind of "bleh" Fashion Week has been, how you can really feel how toned down everything is because of the recession and how we both wonder if maybe designers should have saved money and just skipped this season. Other fashion editors have been talking about how powerful all of the clothes are, how these are tough designs for tough times. While it's true that there's a certain Dynasty meets Tron vibe happening—we've seen tons of black leather, space age metallic fabrics, hoods, and over-the-top '80s-office outfits—that doesn't mean many of these pieces are attractive or something you'd actually want to wear. And that's kind of sad. Anyway, here's the bad news first. We'll round up the best of Fall '09 at the end of the week.
The worst of New York fashion Week, Spring '09

Report Abusethe price of one of these "artistic creations" must be as insane as the clothes! did you see the hat? on the girl with the "happy cows come from california" dress? if i had to wear that thing in public, i would have cut eye holes out of one of my planters and hid my face in it too! HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!! IT'S UNBELIEVALBE! and you know what? i can go to my local resale shops and copy each of these designs for less than 30 eack for the whole head to toe ensamble. i think my mom might still have some of these things paced away from YEARS ago.

Report AbuseRevamping the fashion from the eighties is mostly likely more of a statement on our economy than some people might realize, although I think it's short sited. In the eighties we were also going through a resession with Reagan, after President Carter. This time however we are switching to a democrat from republican. In the eighties over spending on theses kinds of items made sense, because that's the kind of administration we had. Plus in conjunction with the worries of a nuclear
attack from Russia, bright unnatural colors worked, and acid wash jeans as a comment on acid rain makes sense; this time around however it does not. With Obama in office the country is looking for new and hopeful solutions and reflections on society. I agree that fashion in kind of forum is more about an artist's statement and commentary for some designers, but for others it is meant to be worn, or at least meant to be seen as a reflection of what is meant to worn. It would be nice to see something greener, something new, and fresh. The ideas are recycled, but not in a positive way.

Report AbuseLOL! This is so funny you posted this- I found this exact pic (fuzzy orange hat) and sent it to my mom and told her I wanted one for Christmas as a joke. Ridiculous! And the ironic thing is you know if a celebrity was wearing this even THEY would be on the worst dressed list.

Report AbuseCome on people who don't understand fashion! This called Fashion SHOW for a reason. It's a show you know! It's art! Not necessarily you have buy it and go outside on public to the grocery store.

Report AbuseEEEEEEEEEKKKKKK, I scream as I run away, far far away. What the hell is wrong with these designers??? I have seen more intellegent designs from 8th grade home-ec students.
They clothes and styles are just plain awful. I hope the designers have a good attorney when they end up filing for bankruptcy . Because no one is gonna buy that crap.
Yes harsh, but also reality.
