The (shocking?) rules on tipping this holiday season

Unless you're MacGyver-ing at-home pedicures or highlighting your own hair (see video), sometime within the next three weeks you have to tip your favorite stylist/manicurist/colorist/brow shaper-ist. But how much do they expect?

At the holidays, tip the full price of a service instead of your usual 20 percent. So if your cute weekly mani/pedi costs $25, shell out an extra $25 for the holiday. If your bi-monthly cut normally runs $100, tip your stylist an additional $100.  Note, there are a few exceptions.

Shocking? That's the rule, anyway.  Does that sound insane or on target?

P.S. This year sucks money-wise for everyone, so if you can't do that, anything extra is nice. Even a card (write something nice and personal inside) or a girly gift like this.

P.P.S. You can get even cheaper gift ideas here.

The $100 tip sounds insane, unless I also get one extra salary for the end of year.

I guess I've been shortchanging people all these years. The things you learn....

I don't care what the "rule" is. First, they only get tipped if they actually did a good job and went above and beyond. I'm tired of people requiring tipping. If it is supposed to cost $35 then charge $35. Stop charging me $25 and expect $10 every time. Second, 20% is the top I will ever tip. It only goes down from there :)

It's hard to part with money these days, but tipping these folks is the right thing to do. In my experience, you always get back the value in the long run.

That is effing nuts!!!! I already pay 100 bux and now I have to tip 100! No key word RECESSION! Now I tip my hairdresser and pedicure lady but that is stupid ridiculous. Must be the rich people doing that. Or well to do... HELL NO!

Certainly tipping is the right thing to do for a job well done. However, implying that "the right thing to do" in this economy is to pay double for a service just because it's the holiday should be discretionary. If I thought that my stylist expected a tip that large, I would probably cut out a future visit or two in order to maintain my budget.

People depend on and live off of tips. It is not fair to not tip someone because you think they didn't do a good enough job to deserve a tip or because you don't have a lot of money. A tip is part of the cost of certain things, like eating at a restaurant or getting a pedicure. If you can't afford that total cost, including a tip, then you just can't afford it.

Also, 20% is a minimum tip, anything lower is simply unacceptable, and insulting to the person doing the work. They deserve that money, and leaving a small tip or no tip at all is ridiculous, rude, and just cheap. Have a heart, people, it's the holiday, and the rest of the year, people need to pay their rent and feed their families. You expect to make money when you go to work, so understand why you should allow other people to make money when they go to work, too.

I'm too cheap to tip the amount of the service any time, holiday or not. 20% is the most i'd go, for a GREAT job. Otherwise I'm adding some on top of 2x tax for tip, perhaps more if I'm in the holiday give-y mood. Which I am. :)

    Kristy

I dont think anyone is saying they wont tip.... Its just that a 100% tip is ridiculous. Thats two services. I tip. But thats alot.
