This Chipped Nail Polish Trend Just Doesn't Do It For Me

So, OK, I don't mean to be a traitor to my generation and all, but I don't get this whole chipped nail polish trend.

Girls are showing up with raggedy, eighth-day-after manicures and streaky, slapdash polish jobs and I'm supposed to think they're cool? The New York Times proposes lots of plausible reasons that women are coveting this unkempt look—it screams "I'm too busy/fabulous/tending to my Blackberry/playing guitar in a garage band to worry about the bourgeois perfect mani"—but to me, chipped-nail-polish-as-fashion-statement just seems arrogant, lazy, and uncreative.

Bottom line: It never looks good. I'm not going to even try and defend my position for this, because you and I both know the truth. If you're going for some renegade, anarchist style, kudos to you! I love that sort of thing. But I just don't think this is the route. All it takes to maintain chipped nail polish is indifference, and that's hardly the way to create A Look, and let's be honest—that is what you're going for, no?

I think the only person who was truly good at indifference was Marc Jacobs during his grunge collection for Perry Ellis. All of the chipped nail polish in the world couldn't top that. Let's think bigger, friends.

Here, take a Cutex pad. I always keep one in my bag.

I love to keep a clean polished look. Ballet Slippers by Essie or Samoan Sands by OPI are by far my faves. But, the chipped look? I'd never really even heard of it.... but, I think thats so out of pocket. It doesnt say a darn thing about being too busy and cool- it says Ugh I was such a loser, I followed a dumb trend right off the top of the Empire State Building...

A well groomed manicure is a must for me. I have my nails done weekly and will continue to do so until my fingers fall off. Gloves are the only other acceptable way to show my hands.

Is this really a trend? Are you sure you haven't been 'punked'? Chipped nails...IN? I don't believe it. Really? Another pet peeve to add to my list....Right above exposing unkept toenails by wearing flip-flops to work..... I miss the days when grooming skills were a trend.

I Hate that! ok, I have been a nail tech for what 10 years and this drives me nuts. Seriously if it is barly there anyway, just take it off! It looks so much better just naturall than to have half a color there. Gross. Especially to the ones or peel or bit it off! ok you are damaging your nails by doing that. If it is too hard to keep up with manicures just stick with the clear or very light colors...at least it will not show right away when it chips and it will give you time to get to changing it.

I ride the subway in NYC everyday to work and this drives me crazy to see a woman/girl dress up for work or school looking great and beautiful. Then I look at her hands (which I always do because ok I have been doing nails for 10 years). Come on...

I am all about the neat fresh look with it comes to nails. Mine are long and always very well manicured. I would be so embarrassed if they weren't :o)

--sorry if I vented a bit, it is a touchy subject for us nail tech's.

I cannot abide by chipped nail polish. Seriously, one little flake and I become so preoccupied with my manicure that I can't concentrate on anything else until it is fixed...

*Shudder* Gosh, I sometimes don't even like getting my nails painted just because of the inevitable chipping. I even carry around a bottle of the color to do touch ups just because I cannot stand the sight of a chip.

i'm pretty much the same way. i keep my toes painted (because i just don't like how they look without polish) but i absolutely hate it when they're chipped. i just take it off and redo it. no big. with my fingernails i usually just don't wear any because of working with my hands so much, as opposed to just letting it chip off. it drives me insane when it chips.

I'm real picky about my toes, my toes are always painted and painted well. I live in Florida so it's sandal season almost all year. As far as fingers, my nails are always well kept but may be clear-coated or a light sheer color. I don't mind having that chip off cuz the average person can't tell. I'd never walk around with red nailpolish chipped though. . .that's a no-no
