This Hollywood trend stinks: Julia Roberts and Matthew McConaughey skip deodorant

Today we came across two unrelated interviews with Hollywood stars Julia Roberts and Matthew McConaughey where both actors admit that they don’t use deodorant. McConaughey, who is often very active—and shirtless!—says that he doesn’t use it because he doesn't "like to smell like someone or something else.” He added, "If my smell starts to bother someone, I'll take a shower." But what if he’s in the middle of a sweaty workout? Or during an action scene in one of his movies? We love those sexy pheromones as much as the next gal, but stinky B.O. is awful!

This past Earth Day, Julia Roberts hit up Oprah and appeared in a segment about green beauty alternatives. The expert was discussing how most drugstore brand deodorants contain aluminums, and offered up organic alternatives. Julia confessed she didn’t wear either kind. “I don't actually use deodorant. I don't like to share that with a lot of people. It's just never been my thing."

Is this a coincidence or is this becoming a trend? With temperatures on the rise, would you consider skipping deodorant? And if so, how would you stay fresh?

For those who are religious with their deodorant use, do you find yourself offended by the odors of others? [Huff Po][Perez]

I agree that putting aluminum on your pits every day is not good as it sinks in and gets in your system. And I also agree with not wanting to smell all "scented". I hate any kind of fragrance, whether it is actual perfume or cologne, or scented deodorants, lotions, etc. I want to smell like me and I want my man to smell like him, not like a fragrance counter. That said, I am one of those excessive-perspirers, so I do use an antiperspirant and deodorant, and yes, it contains aluminum. I am seriously considering looking for an organic safe alternative. Unscented, of course. Some people are lucky and don't sweat much or their BO isn't really that bad. I am not one of those people, but I have known some! My guess is Julia is one of thoselucky people, otherwise surely by now it would be in the tabloids about how she stinks all the time!

I congratulate those who choose not to use deodorant and it they are not offensive to others with bad odor. However, in this day and age it is important to consider others in that regard. The first impression is a lasting impression and if one is offended by anothers odor may cause one to be everlasting discriminating. Eventhough one may be a celebrity it may cause one to loose interest in their films just because of the stigma imprinted on their brain and nose! That is my opinion, however I no longer have the luxury of the sense of smell and miss the smell rain leaves, coffee opened or brewing or the scent of a new born baby, but unfortunately I can still smell "mugre" or funk. So I will avoid bad odors!!!!!!!!!!!! S.A.M / Milwaukee, WI

I cannot live without my deodorant. If I run out I will use what my husband has on hand. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go out without wearing something. I sweat too much to even consider that as an option. I would have two huge arm pit rings under both arms...ha ha ha...

Wow! So not into the B O! I am all about the smelling good. My dresser looks like the fragrance counter at the deparment store. Scented candles fill the house and even my desk at work. Hate it when people smell bad. It doesn"t bother me at the gym, thats part of the deal when you work out. Please people, hit the shower afterwards! And, first impressions are the most lasting one someone gets when they meet you. No one wants to get to know you better if you smell like the garbage can.

I can not imagine going without deoderant. But I don't like having some scented deoderant under my arms. Last time I tried, I would raise my arms, get a whiff of the perfume and think it was my stink. (Not that I think I smell like flowers, I assure you I do not.)

My boss doesn't wear deoderant. I really like her, but on warm days, she makes my eyes water. On hot days, my eyes water even when she is in her cube on the other side of the wall from mine.

NO WAY could I go without!!! I'm one of those people who are terrified about smelling! I think there is nothing worse than being in close proximity with somebody who has BO, so I try not to be an offender. I stopped using regular antiperspirant/deodorants and I now use mineral salt antiperspirant/deodorant. The reason for this is I have a history of breast cancer in my family. The salts are unscented and REALLY do work without all the chemicals. I was skeptical when my aunt gave my mom, cousin and I these mineral sticks, but I gave it a chance and love it!

When my deodorant disappeared a few weeks ago (i don't know where it went, i have four kids...) I just went without because I stay home most days. I noticed that I really didn't need deodorant since I shower every morning. I bought some more but I think for now I will just save it for days that I know I will be doing something strenuous like yard work or heavy cleaning. I don't really like the smell of deodorant when you start to get warm anyway and I had no BO at all when I didn't use it.

A friend once explained his non-use of antiperspirant/deordorant this way, "If it doesn't come out from the pits, it's got to come out somewhere else." Ponder that one awhile!
