True-life confessions: What's your worst eBay purchase ever?

People often ask me about my eBay habit, and what they basically want to know is how to foolproof the buying from an online auction process. Like "How do you know it will fit?" (Answer: Use a measuring tape), or "How do you know what to search for?" (Answer: Spend an embarrassing amount of time on the site), or "How can you trust people to send you stuff?" (Answer: You can't.) But the truth is, even though I shop and write about it a lot, I still make tons of mistakes on eBay. For example, there was the time I bought the entire 90210 DVD series from some crafty seller in England and it never came (it wasn't even out—scammer!); the incident of the dress that looked cute in the picture but in real life resembled an old lady muumuu adorned with a cartoon panther, a giant grapefruit, and a palm tree (this is the only item my boyfriend has ever pleaded with me not to wear in public); and recently, the shoes pictured here. I hate these Marc Jacobs shoes so much. The picture does not even begin to describe the heck they are on, their complete lack of versatility (or utility—they don't look good with anything), and how poorly they fit. It's all a disaster. They sit in my closet and mock me: a reminder of the mere eBay mortal I am. Sigh. Okay. Your turn. What's your secret eBay buying shame?

I bought a dress totally on a whim from e-bay. Actually, I think I just got wrapped up in the bidding war that was occurring and suddenly I had this dress. I instantly regretted it. When it arrived, I regretted it even more. It was shapeless, about a size too big and was in need of some serious alterations if it was to ever look decent. I tried to give it to a friend and she tried it on and returned it saying "It made me look like frump girl". So now I'm stuck with it and am thinking it would be a fun thing to practice alterations on!

Almost every pair of boots I have ever purchased on eBay. I think maybe one out of 15 attempts has actually fit.

I bought a pair of jeans that looked great in the picture, but when it arrived, the waist band was completely stretched out and the color was so faded. It looked like someone owned it and wore it everyday of her life for the last 5 years. I was a sucker and bought it for $60!! It wasn't even worth $1. That was the end of my ebaying days.

I had a crazy obsession with MAC Cosmetics and purchased 3 GLITTER eyeliners for $120!! They weren't used (or so they said). They retail for like $14 each, but they were limited edition, So I had to have them. Needless to say, I hardly wore them, they dried up and got thrown in the recycling bin. GRRR

Oh and I bought a Kate Spade bag (I later learned was a big FAKE) for $100...for a FAKE bag...GRRR again.

    I don't ebay much anymore.

I am a notorious shopper and about 50% of the purchases don't fit or look right on, I just turn right around and sell them back on ebay. Buy the way, I love the shows and they are the right size, want to sell them?

I've actually been pretty lucky on EBAY. My first purchase (and worst) was a fake LV. I was so mad. You have to be really careful, but touch wood everythingelse I have bought has been fab!
