UGH. Dior creates its most expensive watch yet

Ladies and gentleman, the item of jewelry to your left costs $1.3 million. It is made of 66 rare Siam rubies from a mine in Thailand; some kind of especially special, magnificantly wonderful diamonds; and, possibly, unicorn's tears.

The Dior Christal tourbillion, as it is formally known, debuted last week at the Baselworld watch fair in Switzerland. It was designed by John Galliano and is the most expensive timepiece ever created by Dior. It was part of an event that included loads of similarly-priced items (a $750,000 pocket watch anyone?) and seemed like a sea of scary, unnecessary, downright gawdy extravagance.

To be fair, it must be a strange time to be a luxury watch maker. The number of people rolling around on their thousand-dollar bill collections shrinks every day, and the audience for a fancy-schmancy watch that basically screams to the  world "I'm rich" is so small it might not even include Donald Trump. Even wealthy people don't want to seem wealthy right now.

According to a story in WWD, the "normally high-energy fair was more subdued this time around because of the slowdown in watch sales."  However, retailers seemed to have contradictory views on how to respond to the crappy global economy. “Our new products, intelligently priced, have been successful in convincing our retail partners to invest in a challenging global economy," said one. While another reflected: “I’ve seen some really beautiful big pieces of jewelry. I think in this climate people need to create pieces that stand out in the crowd." Hmmm.

How do you tell the time on it? I guess if you can afford it then it shouldn't matter what time t is? Or maybe you can afford someone to tell for you?

Heh. Unicorn's tears. That's funny. And that's a good point - how the heck do you tell time on that thing? It's really more of a time estimator than an actual watch.

I wonder if the unicorn tears make it shinier...In the other hand I know there is a lot of people with no jobs (my little brother is one of them) foreclosures everywhere, but I went to the mall the other day and it was full of people shopping, I went to Fry's electronics and the same, there were 60 cash registers opened and the line was huge, people buying from a dvd to a 60" screen, then I went to the high end mall and the same, full of people shopping, these ladies had huge shopping bags from Neiman Marcus, Oh, and restaurants are always full, we had to wait 45 minutes to be seated on Sunday night... So, I don't see the recession hitting as hard as I thought and don't forget about the really rich people, they don't care about recession, Recession what??? Galliano knows it and he won't stop designing for them...

Remember, that you pay more for a brand name than the item's materials are actually worth. Like a dress that contains 3 ounces of mid-grade fabric and a special logo stitched on for $200 when it would cost possibly $5 to make, a watch like this would cost thousands upon thousands to make, so the markup will still be just as ridiculous.

Not sure what part of the country some of ya'll live in...but this is not the great depression!!!! I live in the south and I am a realtor. Real Estate is booming and not many home foreclosures in this area. Forbes has Arkansas and Tennessee listed in its top job markets. Instead of bellyaching move to a different city/state and get a job.
