User post: Do you look down on women who have had "work" done?

The other day one of my girlfriends called me to tell me that a girl neither of us like, had tried to friend request her on Facebook. " I didn't even know if I should deny or accept her at first, because I didn't even recognize her," she told me. "She looks nothing like her old self".
"Maybe she had work done", I suggested. I remembered that the last time I actually was in contact with this person, she was spending much of her time trying to have her mouth worked on to look bigger. My friend agreed that more than likely I was right-either that or the girl had spent crazy time photo shopping her pics. Regardless, the whole thing got me thinking about plastic surgery, how its so common these days, and whether this is a good or bad thing.

I am the first to admit, there is a certain 'whoa' factor that happens when you see a women who is bronzed from spray tanning, with hair that runs to her toned bum (thanks to extensions and maybe a little lipo).  The 'whoa' is not necessarily a good whoa either. Its more like the natural reaction one has when you see something out of the ordinary. Think about the last time when you may have seen someone missing a limb or something of that nature. Its not really a pleasant experience, but its not all around horrible. You are just more then likely not use to it, and you just think to yourself, 'whoa'.
I hate to be a hypocrite, so I tell you readers now that part of me feels sympathetic to those who go under the knife. I have spent a good chunk of my life in gyms and on long stretches of roads running and doing various exercises, because like so many woman, being over a certain size, in my head spells a uncertain and unhappy fate. Still, because I have pulled myself out of bed all those chilly winter mornings to pound the road, even though I'd much rather be in bed, I feel like I truly have earned the body I have now, because heck- I put in the pain, sweat, tears and time. Then again, maybe I am hating on someone who can afford to be nipped and tucked while I am left meeting my goals the old fashion way-time and patience. Lets be real here, who wouldn't want perkier boobs or longer hair, a flatter tummy or even prettier features? I think most of us would raise our hands to at least one of these mentioned things.
There is something else here that makes me feel a bit turned off to the plastic surgery/seeking outside beauty assistance, and it it is just this- its all so damn inauthentic. Seriously, when a person is weighed down by fake hair, has a fake glow, a nose and mouth they were not born with, and whatever else a person can have done these days, what else are you to think about their beauty (if they do end up looking beautiful) but how inauthentic it is? I know several woman who have had their breast done. Some look great and others not so great. However, I often want to ask them how they really feel about what they have done and if they truly felt bad with how they were before.

Sometimes I think people who have work done are given to much crap for it. Think Ashley Simpson when she had her nose done. Personally, I love her new nose and prefer it to her older one, and felt bad for her, when people kept giving her a hard time about it. But what about the other celeb and tv personalities? We have all seen Lisa Rinna. Granted, I do think that Rinna is pretty, but not in such a way that when someone asks me to name someone good looking in Hollywood that I automatically think of her. With the exception of the recent photos that have been surfacing of the actress, for the most part when I see her I think she is quiet attractive. However, she doesn't compare (in my opinion) to Angelina Jolie or lets say, Natalie Portman-woman who are natural. There lies the rub- at the end of the day anyone can go out and purchase their good looks, but not just anyone can be, quiet bluntly-naturally beautiful.

I am a little nervous that in ten more years all I will see is fake breast and fake hair and make faces that can't crack a smile without looking like they might just...crack. Whether I'm watching Rock of Love Tour Bus on VH1 or just shopping at the mall, I see more and more woman who have had work done, and I wonder how long will it be till everyone has had a little something nipped and tucked. Maybe by the time my friends start popping out kids (I don't want any myself), it will be more common to buy your daughter a new nose or breast instead of a car. Maybe they will have procedures where people can actually alter the color of their skin and all the skin bleaching factories and tanning booths will go out of business.

What do you all think about plastic surgery?  What do you think of people who go under the knife? For me personally, I think at the end of the day it really depends on the person. Because I knew that the girl who sparked this whole thought process in my head (the whack mentioned above) has body issues, I found the whole fact about her having more work done sad on many levels. For some of the other people who I know who have had work done, which I like very much, my opinion of them is not a negative one.
So tell me ladies and even men- what do you think about the whole commonality of having work done? Are you cool with the idea that in fifty years we're going to have the best looking corpses that this planet has ever seen??

I have had "work" done. I bought larger breasts. I had some issues with my chest and am pleased with how I look now. I do spend a lot of time in the gym, like the author and have realized that I'll probably never be totally happy with how I look. So, no I don't look down on anyone who has had "work" done.

I wouldn't want anyone carving on my face, but if a friend did and was happy with the results, then good for her. I just feel so sorry for those ladies who have made repeated trips to the carver and now look like something from Night of the Living Dead. I also think doctors who " work" on young teens/women should have their licenses revoked. No 16 year old needs breast enhancement. Let's hope those tanning booths do go out of business. It's very difficult to reverse sun damage and skin cancer in later years.

I think if it makes a woman feel better and I would not judge her. I have had a little "work" done myself and I feel much more confident with my body because of it.

I have been thinking about this (even more) and how is plastic surgery different from coloring ones hair? Ok, coloring hair is temporary, but I do believe we all have the right to be/do what makes us comfortable. I think the thing I often wonder when I see someone looking like the cat lady (have you seen that woman?) is I can't help but wonder how happy they really are, and if they are trying to cover up bigger problems, ya know?

There is nothing so ugly on my face that I would pay someone to cut off or restructure. But, that's just me. However, I can relate to the feeling of not being happy with one's self. If you are not happy with yourself, it does not matter what anyone thinks. I say, if you can afford it, go for it.

I have not had any work ever done so I don't have a personal experience with plastic surgery. I agree that it makes people look good or bad depending on what you have done. But I must say botox on people with wrincles doen't look good, when you are older you are supposed to have wrincles, I mean are you going to have botox untill you are dead or is it going to be a major shock to many people when you don't get it done and you have wrinkles galore? Though I can relate to not being happy with my looks because I do have a stomach and I feel selfconciouse but after a while, I forget about it and I try to eat healthy and exersize and almost everyone needs to exersize and eat healthy or else they will want to go under the knife if they are morbidly obesse, or if they want to. All in all it depends on what the person wants not what we want, just like abortion.

Maybe subconsciously I do look down (or feel sorry for them) on people who chose to undergo such surgeries. You only have one body so i think it is important to have a healthy relationship with it. I had body issues when i was younger and it took a while before I accepted myself. People would always compliment me but I can't seem to accept it...I think about negative things or flaws that I have. In my honest opinion, I look up to people who are intelligent and know you shouldn't put "things" on your body that doesn't belong there. HATE IT OR LOVE IT

For me, unless the "work" is necessary, I do look down. I think there would be less problems with body image, if people could learn to love themselves.

I don't have a problem with people getting plastic surgery, although if they get the ridiculously small nose or unrealistic lips/boobs I do.

By the way, both Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie have had plastic surgery - they just did it the right way and didn't try to get something that didn't fit.

i think that if you have the money a little work isn't really that bad, but when you get a lot it just looks bad.
