User post: How Do You Keep Your Hair Color From Fading??

Hello Everyone,
I have short curly hair (think Eva Pigford) and I am planning to color my hair light auburn. I don't  use sulfates and silicones in my hair so I am wondering what products I can use in my hair that will keep it from fading? Does any one know if any tips to keeping my hair red? What products??

I dye my hair red and use Redken Color Protect Shampoo and Conditioner. Also...as weird as it is...I barely wash it. I think that is key. I also use a red color glosser for John Frieda (Radiant Red)It has helped keep my hair color vibrant. But like I said: don't wash your hair that much. I do twice a week.

Etsy.com has a lot of homemade, organic shampoos for hair that may be gentler than anything you can buy in the store. But I think LindsayP is right, washing with any kind of cleanser will strip your hair color little by little. Henna stains your hair, rather than dyeing it, and lasts longer, but you have to be careful what kind you get, can't use it if you've chemically died your hair in the last few months, and shouldn't dye over henna, so don't use it unless you plan on staying auburn for a long time. Check out hennaforhair.com, if you're interested.

Washing your hair with really cold water will help keep color too. Hot water fades color. Also hard water does too. You can buy a filter for your shower. Keep you hair washing to a minimum Like Lindsay P. That also helps and a color safe shampoo.

Reds fade the fastest and the easiest, so it will dull down much sooner than you might expect. Good tips here, but also: wear a hat

fade is a color-stay issue all too common. The simplest things can help if u r up to it.

    1. Visit the salon for conditioning treatments, some even have a color booster in the conditioner. And there is an over the counter one u can buy, i forget who it's by-sorry

    2. Natural/Herbal remedy of lemon juice(2:1 ration with water) for blondes, orange peko/black tea for brunettes. Use as a rinse after shampoo & condition with a leave-in. And they r good for stipping the hair of excess oils & impurities or to naturally high-light the hair.

    3. Try using Castill Soap, in peppermint, almond, or tea-tree oil. No additives, great lather with just a drop to get hair & scalp super clean.

    4. Add a bit of color into your shampoo if you must shampoo alot. Adore is a great semi-permanent rinse. Check you local beauty supply.

Good luck with maintaining your new look.
