User post: “Just for Me” isn’t Just for Kids! Why I Like Using a Children’s Relaxer

We ladies know that relaxing our hair is a very harsh process that our hair undergoes. We are chemically altering our hair every time we get a touch up, so taking care of our relaxed tresses is of the utmost importance!

If you didn’t know already, I relax my hair at home as a result of a few bad experiences with some hair dressers. The major problem I had was that the adult relaxer that they used on my hair was just too strong. My hair is very fine in texture and it doesn’t take much to get it straight. So the safest bet for me is a children’s relaxer.

I want to treat my hair with “kid gloves,” and I always use a child’s relaxer. The brand I use is “Just for me” by PCJ, and the biggest reason I do is because it comes with a pre-treatment conditioner. This light and quick drying product goes on your hair before you start the relaxer process. It works as a layer of protection on your hair so it doesn’t get over processed (which is a risk you take especially when you relax your hair at home). The neutralizing shampoo has a color indicator, which means that if there is still relaxer cream in your hair, the suds will be pink. It helps me a lot in making sure I have rinsed all of that cream out. I also find it much gentler on my hair than most adult relaxers (and I’ve tried a bunch!) and I even still wait as long as possible in between touch ups.

Let’s Dish! So what relaxer do you use?  Would you consider using a children’s relaxer?

Thanks for posting this. I think using kids stuff is a great idea. I use kids mouth wash because the Listerine stuff is too nasty.

I personally think that relaxers are pointless, and it does not matter if it's an adult relaxer or a children's relaxer it is all very harsh and damaging to your hair regardless of what you do to protect, the brand, or your hair texture. I have used just for me and it made my hair fall out, I have had professional relaxers and they are just as damaging to my hair. I am natural and when I want the straight look then I get a blow out, my hair is thicker and healthier since I stopped putting that crack in my hair and cut all of the relaxed hair out. I really wish women would stop using relaxers and embrace there natural hair texture. BUT DON'T PROMOTE JUST FOR ME IT IS NOT A GOOD PRODUCT. If you must relax then get it professionally done and do not color your hair if you have a relaxer because your color will look like it's fading but it's really breaking off.

YEA!!! IM glad somebody talked about it... I use Just for me because it is so much better than burning my hair up with the other ones. And for sistah girl Lekendra, my natural hair is so curly that it knots up. Relaxers make it managable... So... anyway, I'll say that Yes as far as chemicals go, IF YOU MUST, use a lighter dose, it does the same things...

    I don't care if it's an infant's relaxer.

You using an kiddie relaxer doesn't make you any more savvy, intelligent, or enlightened than anyone using an adult relaxer.

You still have the poisonous mindset that your hair must be chemically altered in order to achieve an unnatural hair texture.

Anyone saying that their natural hair is "unmanageable" is a self hating ignorant fool. When was the last time your entire hair was natural? When you were 5? How would you know it's manageability level?

Of course it requires a different set of management skills than it does with a relaxer but it's PLENTY manageable. I've seen EVERY hair texture imaginable in it's natural state. So I highly doubt yours is the only unique unmanageable one.

People who don't want to do something make excuses, people who do find a way

Why don't you do some research and stop trying to attain something that you can never have and embrace the hair that grows out of your scalp.

Chidi, umm...Just because you don't have unmanageable hair or know anyone with unmanageable hair, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. My hair is unmanageable! It gets really frizzy and hard to comb through...even to put it in a simple pony tail! So using a relaxer is definitely in the picture, and besides it makes my mornings easier :) Using a kiddie relaxer or anything like that obviously doesn't make anyone more "savvy", intelligent, and enlightened; no one said that! It's just more gentler on your hair and less damaging than the stronger ones. The last time I had my hair all natural? My hair's all natural right now...natural...but hard to manage so it takes a lot of time in the morning. [now if only i can afford another one of those relaxers!!] I embrace the hair that grows out of my scalp, but still...i can always do something to enhance it :) and it's not an unnatural texture at all...not if you do it correctly, that is ;)

I haven't used a kid relaxer since I was a kid but a good one that my family has been using for many years, forgot the name, but it's in a beige tub, I think called Mizrahi or something.

And for those against relaxers, I understand your point and reasoning. This is America, if somebody wants to relax their hair than okay, if they don't, then okay as well. Just because you relax your hair doesn't make you a self hating ignorant fool. It's called a preferance, maybe we like our hair to look a certain way that we like. I've been relaxing my hair for 11 years and apart from a few split ends, it's been relatively healthy and rather long.

To each their own. I'm not going to judge someone based on if their hair is relaxed, natural, color treated, etc. As long as hair is healthy and the person wearing it is happy with their head of hair, it doesn't matter.

Hair can be beautiful whether its relaxed or natural, judging someone and saying they are in the wrong for relaxing their hair is pointless.

I have naturally curly/wavy hair and its healthy, I have friends with relaxed hair that's healthy also. The author of the article was just writing about her relaxer experience and how she found a relaxer that worked for her hair. It's a good article while offering a different way to relax hair.

I think miss hot couture might be talking about mizani. They make relaxers.
