User post: There's "Essence" for black women... there's "Latina" for Hispanic women... what about me?

So Oprah always says, "Dream Big"...so, I have decided today November 10, 2009 the first day of my declaration of my big dream!  First, a little about myself.  I am a twenty-something, Asian-American gal born and raised in Chicago.  I love reading magazines!  I grew up reading YM, Teen, Seventeen, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Oprah, Psychology Today, Scientific Mind...the list goes on!  When my parents vacation to the Philippines, they ask me what I want them to bring back home for me.  My answer is always, "A magazine!" So, they have brought back the Filipino version of Cosmopolitan and FHM.  I find it so amazing not only seeing Asian models on the cover but, also reading their articles on beauty tips, romance,  and basically experiencing life as a Filipina woman!

I have always thought to myself, "There's 'Essence' for black women, there's 'Latina' for Hispanic women...what about me"?  So, my dream is to start a magazine for Asian women!

Another fun fact about myself, I graduated from the same high-school as Hugh Hefner (Steinmetz Academic Centre of Chicago, Illinois).  I believe some of his creativity/dreaming might have rubbed off on me because he also started with an idea for a very special magazine and look where he is now!

So, Oprah or Hugh Hefner... if you ever come across my blog, just know that you guys have inspired me! (and I hope to meet you guys someday!)

    i think that's a good idea.

i'm curious, though... does anyone else think it's weird to have magazines and sometimes even entire television stations devoted to a specific race, but if i tried to make an all white girl magazine or even worse, W.E.T., i'd probably be the most hated woman in the country by minority groups? that thought always gets my mind going...

To Bree5, I hear that argument a lot, but magazines like Cosmo and Redbook already aim their content toward white women. And for other magazines, like Ebony and Jet, those mags were started just because mainstream magazines didn't feature black people. B.E.T. was begun because most networks didn't offer entertainment for black people. White people have always had magazines geared towards them. I am white, and I alway get infuriated when I read posts like yours.

Bree....I agree completely. I am not in the least bit prejudiced against any race or ethnity, but it is irksome that what other races can do and say is fine, but if a caucasian person does it it is automatically racially motivated. Look at the United Negro College Fund, B.E.T, Jet or Essence magazines. Listen to black comedians and the way they make jokes about white pople's dance moves, the way we talk, the size comparisons for men of the differing races (if you know what I mean). I have never understood the double standard.

If it is considered wrong for one race to degrade another, shouldn't it be wrong for ANY race to do the same?

I do say go for it and definitely follow your dream. But I also do have the same thoughts as Bree. As long as we continue to separate ourselves out by race, we will never truly abolish the existence of racism and it will be by our own choices and actions. I understand and can appreciate the reasons the original magazines and tv stations were started but I do wonder if we still need to encourage the split today and in the future...

Bree and Libby, you two are idiots. The reason why there are magazines, scholarships and television stations geared specifically towards people of color is because the world in general is geared towards white people. It may not be intentional but when I open Cosmo or turn on the tv most of the faces staring back at me are white.

In terms of the original posters point, fashion and makeup tips often times don't cross racial lines and having a magazine that doesn't tell me as an African American that bright pink lipstick and blond highlight are the rage for this season is great and useful. Are the majority of major magazines in American being catered to you not enough? Do you think people of color should have no avenues to discuss issues unique to them? I wouldn't think you are racist if you came up with a whites only magazine or TV show, I would just think its redundant because its so much like what's already present in the world.
