User post: Why, Oh Why Did I Get My Bangs Cut?!!

I've had them before, and I've ALWAYS been disappointed with my bangs.  I have thick, wavy hair, and I always end up with thick, wavy bangs that do not softly and wispily (is that even a word?) frame my face.  No, I always end up looking like a 3rd grader who had "a little accident" with scissors.

It took five years to grow my last bangs mishap out to below my chin.  While the look was pleasing and sexy, in my line of work as a registered nurse I just couldn't have them falling in my face all the time.  Pulling them back was getting old, and at 44 years old, I am starting to get self-conscious about those fine lines across my forehead.

It was Carmen Electra that did it for me this time.  Okay, I'll admit it, I have this mild fascination with Carmen Electra.  Not so much her trampy behavior, but the fact that she is a petite, pretty girl with gorgeous hair.  Okay, I lied.  I kinda envy her trampiness, haha!  I'm really conservative in my appearance and behavior, but deep down inside me I'd love to cut loose once in a while... um, nevermind!

Anyway, a few months ago, I found this photo of Carmen with an awesome layered rocker girl cut that sported soft, fringy bangs.  I took it to my stylist and she did warn me that she'd have to take a lot off my bangs.  I was okay with that.  So, about 6 inches or so was whacked off and I was beyond the point of no return.

Well, let's just say that I am no Carmen Electra!  My heavy bangs want to curve outward into what I refer to as the "mustache flip".  Others might call it the "wing" or "pompadour."  I hate it!  I have tried every kind of way to style my bangs.  Blow dry, flat iron, curling iron--nothing helps.  I'm back to growing them out... again... and writing this as a testament to myself to never, never, NEVER cut my bangs again!

Anyone else have a bangs nightmare they'd like to share?  I could use a support group for the next five years or so!

Aww...:( I'm sorry to hear that your bangs aren't working out. I have bangs too, and for some off reason, they look really dry and stick out. I look so weird. I can't wait til they grow out. Oh well, I suggest you just try to find styles that work along with your bangs. :)

Kathy you are so funny!!!! made my day thank you!

i too have a love hate realtionship with my bangs,I've had bangs for about 10 years i hate my forehead, now that I'm 40 I feel safer, younger with my bangs, but like you because my hair is wavy (not much )

I get a flippy looking bang thing going on and I hate it.

SOLUTION!!!! what i do is I flat iron my bangs only and it comes out really cute and my bangs stay put, but what has me scared is that I'm going to end up with fried bangs so I've been thinking of having my bangs chemically straightened. We'll see if i get the guts

Good luck to you hang in there it'll grow out

Ugh yes, I can sympathize. I have long wavy hair, but sometimes I decide I want bangs to look younger but bangs do not go with wavy hair, they look good on someone with stick-straight hair but not me. I ALWAYS end up kicking myself when I get them cut! And dear, I am 43 and I just get a little botox so I can pull my hair back.

Bangs have never worked for me-they make me look homely. I do not get bangs anymore! Hope your hair grows back quickly.

Amen - I have wavy hair and wear bangs because I pretty much have a 5head. I 100% agree with 80s girl - the flat iron is the greatest invention in the history of forever!!!

    Peace,

    Gypsy

Bangs are not for everybody. I'd never wear them.. just let them grow out or use hair extensions and don't do it again.

    Hi Kathy,

May I join your support group - I'm going through bang trauma myself!

I've been growing out my side-swept bangs for nearly 3 months when last night, I watched celebrity stylist Harry Josh demonstrate how to create volume hair. It was the model Harry used that had my attention. She had the best bangs ever - not too thick, not too thin, perfectly framed her face. I wanted her bangs BADLY. Needless to say, I'm no Harry Josh and now the bangs that I was trying to grow out look like a limp scraggly mess. Can someone take away my scissors?!

Brenda, forgive me for giggling at your story, but I can so relate! I'll confess that I have snipped off a few of those really annoying strands, but I try to stay away from the scissors. Too dangerous!

Of course you can join my support group! Just help me pass around the complimentary headbands, will you?

Thanks you guys for the styling tips. I'm trying my best to cope! I'm scared of that botox needle though, DanielleS, but if your picture is any indication, it's working for you, Babe!

I have thick wavy hair, too, and I hate bangs. Had them all throughout childhood. Growing them out was the best thing I ever did. Headbands, bandannas, etc., are a godsend!
