Wear A Dress--Today!

All women don't agree on whether a dress sends the right message. It does.

By Erin McKean

If you're not wearing a dress today, that's your choice (and I fully support you in it), but I thought I'd post about some reasons I've heard people give for not wearing a dress on any day, and talk a bit about them.

I can't wear a dress to work, my co-workers will think I'm: too dressed up/snobby/looking for another job. The best answer to this is: What do you care more about? Their opinion? Or your happiness?

I can't wear a dress: it's too cold/I ride a bike to work/I have to move boxes. I have done all these things in a dress. (Today I will ride my bike five miles in a dress.) If there's a will, there's a way. These last two excuses are really a coded "Oh no! What if people see my underwear?" excuse, which I believe I answered with this rant here.

I work in a male-dominated industry, and I don't want to look too feminine. Newsflash: I'm pretty sure they already know you're a girl. If you treat femininity as something to apologize for, so will they. Do they worry that they are "too masculine"? I'm betting not. Acting like a guy means doing whatever the hell you want whenever the hell you want until stopped by force (as far as I can tell). So if you want to seem less feminine to fit in, try that first. (And while you're at it, why not pair it with The Perfect Black Pump?)

I feel uncomfortable in dresses. That's not the question. (Actually, that's not a question at all.) The question is: Do you want to feel comfortable in dresses? Then you have to start wearing them, or start trying things on until you find dresses you do feel comfortable in. If you don't really care, then there's no problem. (Need more ideas? See: Va-va-voom Meets the Boardroom)

I'm plus-sized. Yes, finding attractive clothes that fit well when you're a plus-size is not the easiest thing in the world. But if you are determined, it can be done, absolutely. I see plus-sized women in fantastic dresses every day, both in real life and on the Internet. And there's always sewing for yourself. Your sewing machine doesn't care what size you are, and it never gives you a snooty look when you walk into the sewing room.

I hate pantyhose. I hear ya, sister. I don't wear them either. I would say that unless you are a corporate lawyer or work in banking, bare legs or tights are acceptable in 90% of workplaces.

Dresses are too expensive! Sales. Ebay. And most of all: sewing. I've made dresses for $10, including the cost of the zipper & pattern. (And have you seen the price of jeans lately? Sheesh!) (We've made it extra-easy on you. See: The Web's Best Shopping Sites)

I work on an oil rig. OK, yeah, maybe you should wait until your day off.

I'm wearing a dress! Okay. That's a lie. I'm wearing a bikini with a little skirt around it. Does that count? Yes. I'm at work. I take my professionalism seriously.

I love dresses... I live in dresses and skirts! Finding dresses in any size is a problem. Most stores just carry the party type of dresses. I am starting to learn how to sew more than a button and I hope to make my dresses from now on.

Are you FREAKING STUPID?? Aparently you haven't worked on a farm in South Dakota or even been outside when it's 45 BELOW with a wind chill of 30 (yeah thats about 75 degrees below zero!) Wear a dress than and I promise you, I will not be the one whinning that it's too cold.

Emily, I don't recall the author indicating that inclement weather was no excuse. Obviously, like the oil rig, your situation does prohibit wearing a dress. But summer comes even to South Dakota, it's not like you could never wear a dress or skirt.

Hahahahahaha! "I work on an oil rig." Nope I don't work on a rig...but I do work in a refinery and wouldn't or couldn't possibly wear a dress! Although I did think about sewing my Nomex fire retardant suit into a "go-go" style dress!

I love wearing dresses/skirts! I work in a male dominated business and have never had a problem/felt out of place for wearing a dress...it makes me feel pretty and feminine!

The writer of this article should know by now that "one size does not fit all" and that includes mode of clothing. Dresses are not a symbol of femininity or prettiness to every woman and no, not every woman should wear them. I grew up having to wear dresses "because you're a girl," despite the fact they didn't look good on me, they rode up and bare legs/pantyhose/tights caused heat rashes on my inner thighs, some bad enough to weep/bleed.

Kudos to the women who do like them. Wear them in good health. I'll be checking out the feminine/pretty blouses that go so beautifully with my tailored slacks.

I have just started to wear dresses again. I'd forgotten how wonderful they make me feel. Though I do have this wierd thing about having a bad hair day and wearing a dress ....I just can't do it. When I'm wearing a dress I feel like everyone's attention is on me so ...well I don't know I'm just quirky like that lol!

I have never liked wearing dresses as a kid and now. I have a few in my closet but usualy choose to leave them there. I could never wear one to work, it's way to cold at my desk. At the moment I have on slacks with leggings underneath and am still cold, so a dress is just asking me to freeze all day. I don't find them comfortable, I hate pantyhouse so if it's not warm out that will always be out of the question. I'm a tomboy and for me they just aren't what I like.
