What’s Appropriate Court Attire?
partner
- by Style.com, on Fri Jul 24, 2009 10:35am PDT
Maybe the St. Lucia sun
melted her cares away, but Amy Winehouse showed up for court in
London yesterday looking a bit, well, unkempt in an ill-fitting
Roland Mouret-knockoff suit, dirty ballet flats, and a ragged ‘do.
Maybe that’s not so surprising, but the question is: What’s
appropriate court attire? We’ve seen Michael Jackson, may he rest
in peace, in pajamas and Courtney Love looking like she picked up
the first things she found on the floor. Then there was
Nicole Richie channeling Audrey Hepburn in an L.B.D., Jackie O
shades, and Louboutin pumps facing DUI charges in 2007. Our
favorite has to be
Winona Ryder. Her ladylike Marc Jacobs dresses, prim cardigans,
and cute headbands could very well have contributed to that
not-guilty verdict. Any others we’re missing?

Court=Conservative!
Cover that cleavage!! Bland, boring, low-key professional suit dress with knee length skirt or suit w/slacks combo in muted colors for court. 2" heels, not 4-5" spikes! Hair should be clean and neat, not overly done or in an outrageous unbefitting style. Makeup should be kept to a minimum yet done to enhance features. Again, muted colors!
Court is NOT the place to exhibit 'style', no matter how rich you are.

Oh please. Amy Winehouse looked more appropriate than she ever has. Maybe some real shoes would have been better than slippers, but who cares? Leave the woman alone.

Always wear a conservative business suit.

For the average person, Amy's gear is not appropriate for court. For her, this is as classy as I think I've ever seen her look. Conservative business suits are the best bet, particularly for those of us who can't get away with being sloppy based off our celebrity status.

I am an attorney in L.A., and I have never, ever worn pants in the courtroom! I have many, many suits with skirts cut just below the knee, sensible shoes, sensible blouses in soft colors, and keep that hair out of your eyes! I have been in this biz for many years, and I still ALWAYS put my hair up for every court appearance. Guys, suit and tie. Ladies, nice dress, skirt suit, skirt with nice blouse, sensible shoes, minimal makeup and jewelry, and get that hair out of your eyes!

While court is not about your self expression, I also don't think you need to be a conservative suit zombie. You need to look respectable - nothing too tight or too revealing. Heels or flats are fine. Pants, simple (non-spaghetti strap) dress or skirt and jacket are fine. Men, wear clothes that fit, no untucked shirts, no jeans no matter how nice they are. I think Amy's look fit her personality, was pulled together and completely appropriate EXCEPT for the shoes. Slippers are not OK in court. Replace those with a pair of black pumps and it would have been perfect for her.

Here a smart tip: keep your act together so you never have to go to court and won't have to worry about the proper attire.

Not every who goes to court is a mess-up or a criminal waiting to get sentenced. Civil court deals with everyday things like contract breach, lease/tenant, and malpractice cases. Most people's impression of proper court attire seems to run in the strict pantsuit and hair-in-a-bun circle.
Unless you're an attorney, you can ditch the suit. No one cares how you look so long as you look like you're taking this seriously. No jeans, no flip flops, no crazy bling or print and no cleavage and mini skirts. A cardigan or blouse and a knee length black skirt or (grey, pinstripe, brown, khaki) pants will do fine. Black flats are not improper, they're just practical. Basically if you practice good grooming you pass.
