What’s the most expensive clothing item you’ve bought for your child?

Malia Obama, who turned 11 on July 4th, arrived in Moscow with her family this week wearing a $345 See by Chloe skirt. She'd just celebrated her birthday, and she is the daughter of our president, so we're not passing any judgment on the expensive item. The skirt is cute, and we know first lady Michelle mixes up her wardrobe with both high- and low-end items. But, this did get us thinking about how much people spend on their child's wardrobe.

I remember the first expensive item my mother ever bought me. I was 14 years old when I got a white silk dress from Nordstrom to wear to my graduation. I attended this school from kindergarten through ninth grade, so it was a very special occasion, but I was floored when my mother approved the $200 price tag. I felt so important standing in front of a tailor for slight alterations, and the final result was gorgeous. I have many photos from that big day, and the dress, though now too small for me, still hangs in my closet. I'm hoping one day I'll have a daughter of my own who can wear it.

Do you think it's foolish to spend a lot on an expensive garment or shoe for a kid who will soon outgrow it?  Have you ever treated your child with a fancy purchase, and if so, what is the most you've spent? [ABC]

I remember my first LV - I was in 8th grade and my parents brought it back from Paris for me. I was so excited. I still have that bag to this day.

Since my daughter is only 2 I have yet to go w/ a big ticket item... But by the time I was in Jr. Hight I was wearing $150 shoes and had prob. 4 pairs..... (I dread the day my daughter asks for shoes priced like that!! lol!!!) Now my tastes are usually under $100... If not under $50!!

Well, there is no problem spending thousands on dirt bikes, game counsels, computers, cell phones, remote control planes and cars, paint guns and guns of all sorts, game tickets or convention trips for our sons. So what's 300 bucks for a skirt or bag for our daughters? It's all part of the life experience.

Probably my hunt coat w/ breeches, and boots. I feel so lucky to have generous parents, even though we are starting to suffer from the economy.

I can't remember the first thing my mother bought me that was expensive, my father actually would say I was too fat or would not pay for something because it was "in Fashion". I spent most of my life in my grandmothers hand-me-downs because he didn't care that i was being teased at school. My Mother on the other hand took me to the Fashion Bug, I remember when I thought that was the greatest place on earth. I think the most expensive thing they bought me was my graduation dress from college 200$ Banana Republic. My parents are not well off we are small country folk but my mother always said that was no reason too look like you don't know anything about fashion or looking good. I don't know how much my prom dress cost but I don't count that, most parents know to keep it under 300$ and it's just a waste because it's prom. Proms are not that important as Hollywood would like us to think so I would rather point out my proudest moment, my graduation dress, which means a lot more to me and my mother. She was proud of me for graduating with a learning disability showing the world I could do what ever i wanted and my father that a BFA is useful and I was following my dream. That is important, not the clothes I wore or how much they cost.

Joanna D., I think you would've had more commentary if you posted this in the Parenting section (it would work). Most articles here have 70% spam, 20% nonsense, and 10% decent comments in the comments section. Haha. I'm not a parent so I cannot comment honestly. But if I did, I wouldn't be afraid of spoiling my littlun once in a while!
