When did you start wearing makeup? Tweens today spend $500 million a year on stuff like perfume and lip gloss

Oh, heck. According to a story in WWD on Thursday, girls between the ages of 8 and 12 are spending $500 million annually on beauty items, with the most popular products being body sprays and perfumes. In fact, nearly 60 percent of 10 year-old girls say they use some kind of fragrance. (Which is making me try to remember what I smelled like in, what, 5th grade? I so don't think I was aware of this.)
Also popular? Body washes, body gels, an array of skincare products and lip gloss. Lastly, 40 percent of tweens are using colored cosmetics.
Does this bum anyone else out?
Also, I'm curious: When did you start wearing perfume and lip gloss?

Middle school ... I started wearing makeup in sixth grade. My elementary school had a strict no makeup policy. They would send you to the nurses office to wash everything off. All we could have was chap stick or it would be confiscated. I remember a friend wearing red lipstick one day and as we walked in from the buses a teacher sent her directly to the nurse to have it washed off. This was a public county school. In the mid-late nineties. I am 20 now ...

I couldn't afford anything but deodorant. I didn't start until I was in HS, when I had a little xtra $$ and I always wore Love's Baby Soft, and just vaseline on my lips.

I took dance lessons growing up, so there was always the "stage makeup" from the time I was 7, but that was only once a month! Makeup on a regular basis? Well, I will admit, I was one of those that had the hidden makeup bag and donned my face upon arrival to school starting in the 6th grade. By the 7th grade I was busted...but Mom allowed me to wear basic stuff. Makeup was different then though, heavy eyeliner wasn't even a question...it was the early 80's when I was in middle school!!

As for the girl who said her elementary school had a no-makeup policy...GOOD FOR THEM!!!!

I allowed my step-daughter to wear basic light makeup at 12, and now that she is 16, I will still butt in if she makes mistakes...like the lipstick she thought was red and looked orange (shudder). My (in 2 weeks) 8 year old daughter loves lipgloss, which i let her have as long as its a sheer color, but never at school! Playing dress-up is one thing, but in public, she is a fresh-faced little girl!! And she will follow the same rules as the older one...no face makeup or eyeliner until 12.

My honest opinion is that there are enough freaks in the world who prey on children...why allow a ten year old to don makeup that makes her look 17 and add to that problem? (now everyone thinks i'm an old fuddy, right?) I mean really, when you see a kid, 9 or 10 years old, at the mall in full face makeup...don't you look and think "either her mom doesn't care about her enough" or "she would be in trouble if her mom saw her like that"? Kids need to stay kids as long as possible...and sometimes as a parent that's a battle, but looking back...I'm glad my mom stuck to her guns.

I was allowed to wear lipstick starting at age 16. Gradually more was added: neutral eyeshadow and clear mascara. Then powder when I was 19. I didn't start using foundation until I was in my mid-twenties. I don't see anything wrong with allowing a 13-year old to wear lipgloss and clear mascara, and teaching her how to groom her eyebrows, but more than that looks skanky on anyone under 16 years of age. Parents are letting their tween girls dress up like child porn stars! If I ever have a girl, she will be the different one with no (or almost no) makeup, and decent clothing.

i wasnt allowed to use any makeup until the age of 16. my parents were too strict and i had my eyebrows done at the age of 19!! but nowadays everything has changed. my younger sister was allowed to use makeup at the age of 10!!!!!!! but u see i dont see anything wrong with using makeup for girls as young as 10 or less coz i believe tht if they are allowed to do wht they like with theiry appearance at a very young age when they grow up they would their interest n they wouldnt think tht makeup is very great or stuff like tht

I started wearing powder with sunscreen in it in 6th grade. I added mascara and eyeliner in 7th grade. In 8th grade I started using eyeshadow and everything else. I remember using chapstick way back in elementary school but I really didn't start wearing only lipgloss until 8th grade...now I can't stand going without it. I'm a Junior in high school now so it was only 5 years ago when i was in 6th grade.
