When Is It OK To Go Braless?

Now here’s a dilemma I’ve never had to worry about since l was 12 and grew size-C boobs one night in the middle of 7th grade: to wear a bra or not to wear a bra? See, even after breast reduction surgery when I was 19, I still can’t fathom actually going braless out in public. I rarely even feel comfortable enough to free-ball it the privacy of my own home (my boobs at 33 simply aren’t what — or where — they were 10 years ago). That isn’t to say I’m not a little jealous of women who don’t have to wear a bra. When I read that quote from Christina Applegate about the, uh, perk of going braless since getting implants after her double mastectomy for breast cancer, I thought, Well, at least there’s one upside! But then, I still have to wonder, just because a woman feels she can go braless, does that mean it’s appropriate?

This question comes after reading an article in today’s Daily Mail about a photo of a braless Kate Moss looking very much like a 35-year-old, post-breastfeeding woman who arguably could have used a little support. The article seems to pose the question: Is it appropriate for women of a certain age to continue eschewing bras while out in public? But a better question might be: Is it appropriate for women of any age? It seems to me that no matter how small and perky a pair of boobs might be, they can always benefit from an extra layer of fabric between them and the rest of the world. At the very least, a bra can help dim the headlights a little, right?

You ladies out there with the delightfully perky boobs what say you? Do you ever skip the bra just because you can? Where and when do you think it’s appropriate to do so, and how do you justify your decision? And for everyone: is going without a bra simply a matter of comfort or is there a thrill in being that much more exposed?--Wendy Atterberry for The Frisky

With the exception of the workplace, it's "appropriate" to be braless anywhere/time you want to be braless.

I know a woman who is 62 and looks like she is 25-30 yrs old. She has full firm breasts and enjoys it. (They are REAL btw. 34D's). The rest of her body looks as good.

And she admits she enjoys the looks/glances she gets.

If you have it, flaunt it (if you wish). If you don't have it, don't run down those that do.

I never go braless in public and, quite frankly, I don't care to see other women braless. There is something to be said for keeping some things intimate.

its just not appropriate in public if you dont want a bus load of elementary kids seeing it you don't do it in public, have some class.

people don't seem to care whats thrust out in front of our kids these days.

the best time of my day is when i get home and take my bra off... but i only go braless at home... and wear them back when we have people over... otherwise, i dont feel comfortable going braless in public... i used to work with this woman (in her 50's) who came to work braless... it made everyone uncomfortable... and she always wore light colored shirt and no camisole under either... i dont want to be looking at her "headlights" when she spoke to me...

The beauty of living in the U.S. you can go braless anytime you want or you can do it just to piss off those who hate it.

Hmm... that's a tricky one... with my DD's the answer is never... However, I don't want to see some old woman going braless and pretty much showing them off (even if it's unknowingly)... I would love to go braless every once in a while or to be able to wear the halters that you don't have to wear a bra with... but like I said with DD's it's just not going to happen... if they were smaller (like a C or smaller) I would feel comfortable... just not now..

Even if there is no issue of seeing the nips, there is still the issue of shape... a bra just makes the girls rounder and cuter. Even perky breasts don't look as good braless, IMO. Wearing a bra definitely gives a more finished, polished look with clothes; it also often makes a woman look taller and thinner because she tends to have better posture. But then, maybe I'm biased to the brassiere since my own girls grew a thousand sizes from the Pill and failed to shrink after I got off it!

I go braless at home, when I don't plan to be out in public. The exception to that is when I fly, since I'm flying and/or at airports for at least 8 HOURS!

Like, if you have tiny boobs and wear a cami with a built in bra, or like a thick cardigan or something, then fine, go braless. But if nips are visible, don't. Being a 36DD, braless is not an option for me.
