Would you spend more on your kid’s clothing than your own?

Stella McCartney for Gap

Stella McCartney for Gap

Stella McCartney has designed for Chloe, H&M, Adidas, opened four shops of her own, and even launched her own fragrance and organic skin care lines. Now with three young children of her own, she's decided to scale down her designs--physically, that is. Her latest venture is a fall collection for Gap Kids and Baby Gap and hits stores on November 2. Garments will fit newborns to preteens, and range in price from $14 for wool tights to $128 for a military jacket.

While this collection is admittedly adorable, we're not sure who will be shelling out big bucks on items for four-year-olds who will soon outgrown them. $14 for stockings? We don't like spending that much on tights for ourselves! And while the Sgt. Pepper's inspired coat is very cool (and a nice homage to McCartney's ex-Beatle father), we can't imagine toddlers gravitating towards such a stylized, mature garment in the way an adult would. Boys sketching sneakers that come with a set of pens, seem like a great idea, though we fear how much they cost, and parents may not want their children getting the idea that it's OK to draw on their expensive new clothing.

McCartney's collection will be carried in select stores throughout the United States, Canada, the UK, France, Ireland, and Japan. Will everyday shoppers shell out for designer denim for tots, or will rich fashionistas be running to their local malls? We'll have to wait and see.

Would you ever spend more on a clothing item for your growing child than you would on yourself? [Reuters]

No I would never buy expensive clothes for my duaghter. No matter what she has on she is climbing, jumping, skipping, and stainging everything she wears. After all she is a kid. Besides that she grows out of everything so fast it's a waste of money.

No way... My daughter has at once or twice now out grown stuff before the season is even over!! So mid-fall I might be bargain shopping for more clothes after she has another growth spurt ... Last thing she is getting is a $130.00 jacket she will wear for maybe 4 months if I am lucky!! Plus at 3 she really would rather have the $20 Dora sweatshirt anyway!!

$128 for a jacket my son will outgrow in a matter of months? I don't think so.

Not usually because they grow too quickly.

Why would I buy a jacket for 130 dollars that my son will tear up in a matter of days on the playground.. and pray tell why would I phathom spending that sort of money for what 6 mos tops for my son to wear. From what I hear we are all tightening our belts and looking for good quality clothes at lower prices.. not designer clothes for big bicks. I don't know who made this decision but GAP is way off the mark with where this country's economy is at...

Who would spend that much on their kids? That's just crazy. I mean, they're still growing! And besides that, kids play. Those clothes would be quickly ruined. What a waste of money

What is more interesting is if you look at where these clothes are made, they're made either in China or some other country. Why would I pay 130.00 on an item made in China vs. 50 bucks on something made in China...seriously do they think we're that stupid.
