Would You Take Beauty Advice from Someone Who Wasn't Beautiful?

Earlier today, we were pondering a profound (at least, I like to think it was) question: How important is it to practice what you preach? By this, I mean, do you care if the person giving you hair advice is bald? Or the makeup tips you're getting are coming from someone who, frankly, looks a bit disheveled?

I think it, obviously, depends on the situation. I know plenty of bald hairdressers whom I would still listen to because they spend their lives styling other people's hair. On the other hand, there are quite a few YouTube videos out there where women are giving decent advice (check out our faves here), but often they look like they just rolled out of bed or worse.

What do you think? Will you listen to a potentially good makeup tip no matter what state the person giving it is in? Or do you find beauty advice from un-put-together people a bit sketchy?

Would you take financial advice from a woman who looked like a bag lady?

Darn right I would, I knew one such woman who was a millionaire. How do you think she got that way. She pinched pennies, needed very few creature comforts and didn't give two hoots about what others thought about how she looked. I worked for her accountant at the time. Millions!

IDK, there are some people I would not take beauty advice from. I mean if they don't know how to apply their own make up why would I think they know how to apply mine.

I think that's where not judging a book by it's cover comes in. People tend to assume one thing based on how a person looks, but never actually have the full story. As Mrs. B said, sometimes that woman who looks like a bag lady has millions. I remember a story on the news back when I lived in the MW. A guy walked the streets collecting money from people. He looked poor and homeless, but he in fact had a huge house in one of the more affluent burbs. So...

Hair advice from somebody who is bald? Sure. There are many reasons a person could be bald. Maybe it's genetics. Even women have hair loss problems. Sometimes it's choice. Maybe it was cancer. Or maybe they let a friend perm their hair...

Beatuy tips? Yeah. I used to work in the modeling industry so I tend to listen to tips and can pretty much pick out which ones will work and which ones won't.

Financial advice? Sure. Even if the person isn't rich maybe I can find out how not to end up like them.

It depends on the advice. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and just because you don't like someone's style, doesn't mean you can't learn from them.

Personally I wouldn't take financial advice from anyone. I would dig in to it myself and find out what works and doesn't work. I wouldn't take too many beauty tips either. People always think they know what's best and tips always conflict with tons of other seemingly useful tips. Good for the bag lady but I could care less. She did what was smart and saved her money wisely how is that a tip. It's common sense.

It really depends on the situation. Getting hair advice from someone who is bald, sure, I mean they probably had hair at some point in their life, right? Getting hair advice from someone whose hair is over processed or unattractive, not likely!Same goes for makeup advice from someone who doesn't wear any, sure. Just cuz they choose not to wear it doesn't mean they don't know some good tips. Taking makeup advice from someone who has a heavy hand, or isn't using "now" colors, probably not! It's all relative!

uhhh I had to comment on this I had a friend who would always try and tell me how to wear my hair (she never washed hers but once a week) she never wore makeup but would try to tell me I would look good in certain eyeshadows. I asked her how come you're always trying to give me advice but you don't take any of it she said "cause I don't need to" Gross!!!!!

It depends. One of the best haircuts I've ever got on my then waist-length hair was done by a short haired, almost completely shaved man. That said, he's been recommended to me and I knew for a fact he's spent his life working with women and their long hair.

On the same basis, I'd accept advice from a male make-up artist who doesn't work on himself, because I find make-up on men rather tacky. However, I would absolutely not accept it from a woman who can't be bothered to cover the shadows under her eyes or apply some lipgloss.

I'd be rather sceptic towards a manicurist with ugly hands or a dermatologist with bad skin.

One thing I'd never, ever accept is fashion advice from a person who walks around in sweats and trainers *all* the time.

I noticed that people who have bad hair and make-up give good hair and make-up advice. i think its because they spend so much time observing what other people do that they notice when someone else they look at needs some help. they just don't know how to intergrate the concept on themselves.
