Now it’s your turn: Shine readers’ thoughts on Sarah Palin

Associated Press

Associated Press

Tonight, Governor Sarah Palin accepted the Republican nomination for Vice President, and for the last two days, Shine readers chimed in about this historic nominee. We were so impressed with the responses to yesterday's story about Palin that we highlighted your comments and blog posts. Here are some highlights.

The double standard
First off, the most popular opinion shared by most Shine readers by far was, if Palin were a man, she'd be measured very much by a different standard. Reader honey_lovebug commented: "Has it been asked of Obama if he can raise a family while in office? Why should it be asked of her?" And Boss# writes: "I'll say it again, what about the father's place in the family? Why is it just the mom [who] is so important?....How 'bout holding men accountable for their involvement with their families? I think that's just as important if not more so."

And a lot of you were actually outraged by our posts, saying that our questions were downright insulting to women, like reader Encee: "According to these questions a woman needs to be childless, husdbandless, and of course physically unattractive in order to earn our respect as a professional. Oh, my goodness. I'm 51. And in great shape. And I have a 16 year old autistic son I've home-taught since he was 5. And I'm pursuing a career now. So, according to this discussion you are instigating I have no business - perhaps no right as well?- to want to accomplish something in my own right - not just spend the last half of my life living in my husband's shadow? I should just tie on my apron and head back into the kitchen? Are you in your right mind????"

Encee and others who commented similarly, let me assure you; we think it's ridiculous that women and/or moms should have to sacrifice any opportunity in the world. But, as Yahoo!'s site for women, we think it's important to raise some of the questions being discussed by women all over the country right now, and maybe bring attention to just how much more complex being a working woman and mom really is. So, please don't tie on that apron or get in your husband's shadow. You keep being your amazing self!

The Bristol effect
Many of you had comments about the recent news about Palin's teenage daughter's pregnancy, starting with those of you who really put the blame squarely on the Governor. Reader wendy writes: "if she was a true "hockey-mom", wouldn't she have known what her 17 y/o daughter was up to? if she can't keep with that news, how can she be up for the challenge of VP?"

And others don't fault her for simply being a working mom, but more on being a working mom seeking such a big, high-profile job. Whew writes: "What woman in her right mind with 5 children under 18, would think she could possibly take on one of the most stressful jobs in the country without risking the emotional and well being of her family?" Reader mbrjpr55 adds: "She has a family and five children which does enter into this equation whether people want to admit it or not. It is up to her which will suffer - career or family, but something will have to give."

Meanwhile, many more of you are very supportive of Palin as a working mom who's coping with the difficulties of raising a teenager. Reader momztm comments: "Can we honestly judge Gov. Palin for her daughter's actions? What were YOU doing at 17?" And Mimi-pz adds: "The fact that Palin is supporting her daughter despite the microscope says heaps to me. Really shows her family values."

Lastly, a number of you put the blame not on Palin's maternal skills, but instead on her abstinence-only education stance. Springtime says: "Sarah has been a big supporter of the abstinence only program in Alaska. Well, sure looks like that doesn't work in the Palin household."

Will she bring in women?

So now that we have the first Republican female VP pick, we're all wondering how women voters will react to her. Will they embrace her? Be skeptical?  For some Shine readers, her pick is definitely suspicious, indicating that McCain's choice is just pandering. Gypsy writes: “McCain's choosing of her is sooo transparent and very crafty."

Meanwhile, other are simply skeptical of our intentions of even asking some of these questions, such as reader Michael D: "The only reason this successful smart woman is not being completely embraced is because she is a conservative. Liberals are all for feminism, aas long as they are liberal feminists. This woman could be positioned to run for resident after McCain and where is the excitement??"

Shine readers, we're absolutely excited that a woman -- especially a working mom -- has climbed to these great heights. And honestly, we'd be asking similar questions of Hillary Clinton if her situation were more like Palin's. But the fact of the matter is, Palin has a very unique set of circumstances that have us torn in all kinds of new ways. That's why we're glad we have all of you here to bounce these ideas and questions off of and learn more about what women in America think.

So she thinks its Gods will to destroy the Country and send troops off to their death. Hmm as a Catholic myself, I dont see how this would be anything like the will of God. And she certainly isnt pro-life, if she thinks this. Christians arnt for war at all. We are anti-war. So I think she is just saying this to agree with the evil McCain. McCain is Bush, Bush is McCain the two are long lost twins or something. They share a head. I dont want twelve years of destroying the country. We are all in debt as it is because of the WAR. WE dont want Republicans in office. By the way true evangelicals believe that God is the only one to take a life not guns at the hand of another.

bartosiewiczan - That is the stupidest thing I have read yet! Do you think that it is only working moms kids that make mistakes? Maybe you should wake up and look outside your glass house! There are kids from all walks of life that make mistakes. I could preach to my kids until I'm blue in the face about the right choices, that doesn't mean they will always make the right choice. Sometimes we have to make mistakes to learn from them. Lord knows I am living proof of mistakes made and learned from......apparently your perfect!

Yes, Chelsea Clinton is certainly a wreck, from her mom being too busy as "co-President" and working on things like a national health care plan to parent her properly.

By the way, who gets to decide what "properly" is?

missmiss, did watch the convention speech last night? Her experience out shines that of any other candidate, other than McCain. I'm not trying to be rude, just wondering, because she's done some pretty good stuff.

I don't think we should all be jabbing at each other here. Can we not work TOGETHER? This article was bait, and we all took it. I've heard enough already and read TOO many hateful words here between women. What is wrong with us???? Let's bring each other up, not tear each other down.

Chelsea Clinton is an only child who is nearing 30. She is 27 or so I believe. This gal has 5 kids and the youngest is a baby. And one is also as everyone know now pregnant at 17. This isnt an average lifestyle for young girls. The teen pregnancy might be up, but that doesnt make it normal. I am 19 yrs old and Have never even kissed a boy, or had a boy friend. I dont believe in dating anyone, love or lust takes time.

You know, I'm reading these different comments about Palin and if she's the right woman/person as the RNC's VP candidate. I am so surprised to hear so many women comment that a woman can't or shouldn't (shame on you) and, so many men continue to anchor their misogynistic rhetoric in any public arena that a woman is placed front and center. And just to be clear, I will not be voting for she and McCain because I do not agree with their politics. And to add to this, I was a bit disappointed that Obama didn't /couldn't choose Clinton as a running... We are are long overdue in having a women in the highest positions of our countries leadership.

We finally live in a time and place where ANYONE has the ability to reach whatever station in life they are willing to work for. If we so value the "freedoms" that just about every American claims make this the greatest country in the world, then why is a woman in this position even a question??? When do we stop living with these archaic ideals that everyone "has a place"? And it's both men and women promoting this backwards thinking. When do we start leading forward as a country and not clinge to the old notions? I certainly feel that this is a degrading view to all women who are both professionals as well as mothers. My mother did both, as did most of my friends that I grew up with. They ensured our well-being, education, moral development, and health. And did so working full-time, professional jobs. As do many of the women I work with and for. These are women that are bosses and co-workers, that I admire and respect for their professional abilities. Rather than assume they are in the "wrong place". And I work and have worked with plenty of men who are not as capable or respectable as many of these women. So when do we stop perpetuating these types of backwards ideals that do very little to favor anyone as we continue to face the challenges of the future...?

I am not a McCain/Palin supporter but I figured Id give her a chance and watch her speech. I was NOT impressed whatsoever. She was a horrible speaker and did nothing to improve my image of her. Being a single 20something living in a big city; the fact that shes a hockey mom does nothing for me nor does it comfort me that shell be able to run this country. Also, reagrdless of what Republocans say, taces will be raised regardless. This country is in horrible shape and either party will have to raise taxes. At least Obama wants to put the money towards good programs and use it in a way that helps everyon, not just the rich.

I think the important things to focus on when selecting a President & VP are their political track records and their character. Gender is not a huge factor to me. When Gov. Palin decided to accept the nomination I'm sure she expected her life to be on display. I must admit I am disappointed that her 17 yr old daughter is pregnant. I think it sends the wrong message to teenagers. When I was growing up teenage pregnancy was seen as disgraceful. I realize that this fact is not as important but I can't help but be distracted by it. American citizens have the right to know ALL of the candidates' business.

We've got to question whether Senator McCain and Gov. Palin will be effective at bringing about change and improving things for ALL Americans.

We've got to focus and recognize that Gov. Palin is just another distraction created by Senator McCain and his campaign to get more women to vote for him.

We've got to realize that we are a country in crisis and there is absolutely no time for a President & VP who are not SINCERE about issues that Americans face.

I really don't care about her personal life; but the more I read about her time as mayor and governor, the more I dislike her. I didn't know people in America still tried to get books banned from the library in this day in age. Shows you how much she approves of our First Amendment right. Reminds me of a certain German with a funny mustache...

Gov. Palin is not only not qualified to run the country when McCain gets cancer again or dies, she apparently has not been the best mother, nevermind actually allowing her daughter to continue the pregnancy but advocating marriage at 17....a really really awful choice and I can't imagion any intelligent person would cast a vote for a gun-toting, moose eating woman who is stuck somewhere in the 70's fashionwise.
